This is one of my first attempts at baiting, currently in progress. It�s a very boring bait, but I thought it�s worth showing how easy it is to get into baiting via the phone lads, they can�t ask you for any documents or anything like that as there�s no need to, and you don�t really even need to have anything to send to them at all.

The purpose behind it was to report accounts as soon as possible, but I took a few, including this one, further to see if there was any fun to be had. My aim is to try and waste some of their time, and to keep building them up, having them smelling money, and then letting them down as many times as possible.

The first few e-mails were all mass BCCs to all the known phone lads. Every now and again I sent the same short query to everyone that had replied, and deleted all the messages from my Inbox.

Queries were boring things designed to try and waste time, like if they had a website, whether they had specific models, how much the cheapest phone with (x feature) was, if they delivered to the UK, if they could give me their price list in UK � sterling, and about discounts for bulk orders. I didn�t keep all these e-mails.

Not very many people made it to the end if the BCC to all replies, and some more got left behind because they couldn�t understand what I was asking and I couldn�t be bothered explaining, or because they didn�t answer the question properly or at all. Everyone who gave a first reply was reported, so a lot of messages also started bouncing

I carried on with the five I thought were most helpful, on the host slowest to kill accounts, and the first message where the replies got individual attention was the tax scam one. I moved very quickly with this bait at the beginning as I wanted to see how it would pan out, and sometimes pushed the scammer for quicker responses, so they didn't receive all the old favourites like DLL files. It's going a bit more leisurely now; I won't be able to do anything with it for a week because of my work, but once I get back.... there's a lot of fun to be had, I still haven't even had to send the fake MoneyGram Smile And with MA going to be on holiday in Africa round about the time there is trouble making the payment for the order that is going to be truly massive and 110% urgent...

I know you are a very busy person with a business to run, so I make an offer to you to make this worthwhile. For ever $100 the fake invoice is higher than the real invoice, that reduces my taxable profit by $100. VAT and income tax are about $40, so I pay $40 less tax.

Please, I am asking all the people that have replies to me enquiries to think about this offer carefully. Please, give me your co-operation, and also the percentage share of the saving that you would require to consider this, and get in touch with me. Then I can give you the business. I am doing a stock take at the weekend, and will have my order ready when I am finished, this has been a good week so I think it will be about 30 or 40 phones in total - I will get an official order completed and to you on Sunday, or Saturday if the shop is quiet. Can you tell me how your Western Union Bank works? I will ask my book-keeper, but I have never seen this before, I usually get my book-keeper to pay by BACS or IBANC, or cheque from my account at HSBC. I realise cheque may be too slow for foreign transactions, and BACS / IBANC may not be available to you, so if these are not good please tell me how my book-keeper should get my bank to make this transfer to yours in case he does not know.

Also, would you like a second order showing lower costs, so you can 'reduce' your profit and save tax too? Nothing is too much trouble when I am so grateful.

(The three places named are three very remote places at different locations right across Scotland. If you ever feel like going to O itself, please pop into my phone shop, the kettle has always just boiled. It�s four hours from the nearest city to the ferry port, and the ferry takes 2 � hours and runs three times a week to Colonsay (pop just over 100 I think). In these parts of the world you can get a lift in the post van, which meets the ferry, and that will take you to the south of Colonsay. The tidal causeway from there takes you across to a very small island with a lovely ruined priory on it, and you�ll not miss my shop, it�s in the industrial units at the business park.

O doesn�t have any claims to fame, but in the days before satellite TV, licensing inspectors outraged at there being no licensed TVs on the island at all once made the onerous trip to Colonsay to teach the islanders a lesson. It seems nobody told them you couldn�t get a signal, and because of the infrequent ferry service they had to stay on the island another two days after finding this out.

I am mixed up now - I don't know which of my messages you are getting.

Did you get my message last night apologising as I had placed the order with someone else when I couldn't contact you? We cancelled the order, brought it back again when we heard from your new address, but cancelled it again completely when it didn't work either. My accountant went out to pay the other company today.

I am really sorry about this. Please don't worry too much, I want to place my next order and many more to follow with you, because of your keen prices and your help with the invoices.

Please keep in touch with me to let me know how to contact you, and you will receive our next order when we make it, in about two weeks time. BG will add your supplier details to our computer system when he is back in the office, so that there can be no delay with the next order.

I also asked you to send me your full price list. We want to add this to our computer system too, so that when we make our next order we do not need to wait for a quotation, but only for your invoices and confirmation that you have the phones in stock. This will also speed things up next time

I have just got your messages; I was out of the office. Unfortunately there seems to be some kind of misunderstanding here.

What seems to have happened is that we have two supplier accounts for you on the computer system. I'm arranging for the duplicate one to get shut down. I think you did receive my apologies for cancelling the order when you were having problems with your e-mail address?

I can assure you again that we will place our next order with you, we'll probably be ordering again in about a weeks time, depending on what sales over the weekend are like.

I know Mike asked you to send a full price list so that we can get the next order moving faster, and presuming you've done that hopefully there won't be a problem next time.

We definitely will be ordering from you again. Not only were the other company a little bit more expensive, but I don't think they followed our instructions for getting the goods through customs, as something seems to be delaying delivery and we are still waiting for the goods. (And they didn't offer that other bit of extra assistance with the tax that you could.)

She just sent the original price list from the very beginning again. I don�t think it�ll help her avoid the quote stage next time, it doesn�t have any of the phones we ordered on it, I ordered from the complete range of HTC phones and PDAs. Tut tut.

Never mind � Would it be too evil for BG to give her a little flavour of what she�s missing out on? No. I didn�t think so either. (It�s going to be very very important she gets those customs forms right when it�s her turn.)
