We had a small house fire in our utility room in November caused by the motor on our freezer. Fluff from the tumble dryer had built up behind the freezer which overheated the motor, igniting it. Our smoke detector alerted us immediately and we got us and our 2 dogs out. Despite the fact we shut the utility room door the smoke poured through and out of the flat. It was pure toxic due to burning plastic etc. The flames only reached 2ft high but the smoke and water damage was immense.
On a lighter note the fire brigade, wearing breathing apparatus, rescued our house rabbit from the living room. My enduring memory of the night is seeing two fireman carrying her cage out of the smoke, laying it in in the garden and anxiously looking at her, oxygen at the ready!! She was bright eyed and bushy tailed and totally bemused by all the fuss 
Anyway please check your appliances etc this Christmas as a fire is very frightening and the clean up operation is a pain in the arse
