Ok so I threw a line out and got a nibble. This bait is in it's early stages. This lad told me from the get go that I would need the services of an attorney. Well there is an attorney that does pro bono work at the senior center I go eat breakfast at at least once a week. He is such a nice attorney and he has gained my trust. Anyway he obviously tries to work with the scammers to drain the bank accounts of the old retired folks that trust him so
he is currently trying to convince my attorney he should simply step aside and advise me to use the attorney provided. Our thought is that if others at the senior center reach out to him---perhaps just perhaps he will see value in giving my attorney a piece of the score and letting him represent not only me but the senior center
So here is where we are---it all started when my character got this letter....

Dear Friend
It is with trust and confidence that i write to make this urgent business proposal
to you.i was assigned by two of my colleague to seek for a foreign partner who will
assist us in providing a convenient foreign account in any designated bank abroad
for the transfer of us$35,500,000.00 pending on our arrival in your country for
utilization and disbursement with the owner of the account.
this amount results from a deliberate inflation of the value of a contract awarded
by our ministry - the federal ministry of agriculture (F.M.A)to an expatriate
company.the contract has been executed and payment made to the original
contractor, remaining the over-invoiced amount of us$35.5 million, which we want to
transfer the funds out the country in our favor for disbursement among ourselves.the
transfer of this money can only be possible with the help of a foreigner who will be
presented as the beneficiary of the fund.
as government officials, we are not allowed to operate foreign accounts, and this is
the reason why we decided to contact you. we have agreed that if you/your company
can act as the beneficiary of this fund (us$35,500,000.00 million)25% of the total
sum will be for you for providing the account while 5% will be set aside for the
expenses incurred during the cost of transfer of the fund into your account while
70% will be reserved for us.
we hereby solicit for your assistance in providing a convenient account number in a
designated bank abroad where this fund would be transferred.we intend coming over
there on the completion of this transfer to secure our own share of the money.
please note that we have been careful and have made all arrangements towards the
success and smooth transfer of the fund to your account before you. for security
reasons and confidentiality of this transaction, we demand that you should not
expose this proposal and the entire transaction to anybody.
we are putting so much trust in you with the hope that you would not betray us. or
sit on this money when it is finally transferred into your account.be rest assured
that this transaction is 100% risk free. if this proposal is acceptable to
you, indicate your interest by sending a email to us including your bank name &
address,account number,telephone and fax numbers.
note:our former president Dr.Good luck Ebele Jonathan collaborated with the former
chairman of the Economic Financial Crime Commission,Mrs Farida Mzamber Waziri to
stop the junior ranks officers from transferring funds out of the country. he sent
different publication to many countries in the world as propaganda to discourage all
government officials from transferring funds into an overseas account to avoid and
save guides the countries economy.
apparently, so that other government officials will not benefits from these( oil
windfalls venture) where he has been a culprit alone with his aides.more details
about this transaction will be given to you as soon as we receive your positive
respond.
note that the particular nature of your company's business is irrelevant to this
transaction. if this transaction interests you, your urgent response will be
appreciated.
yours faithfully,
Dr.Evans Egobia |
of course a prompt and courteous reply was in order

Dr,
This is all so exciting. Below please find the details you requested. You had made mention of the necessity of an attorney to secure some approval documents. I have my own attorney who I copied here on this reply. Mr Pierce handles all of my legal matters and I am sure he will have no problem effecting the requisite documents as needed. He is not cheap so I trust you will provide him what he needs in its entirety and without delay so that he may do his job in the shortest time possible.
1.Your First/Middle & Last Name: josson (no middle name)
2.Your Full Office or Residential Address: ResidenceXXXXXXdace Street Chicago Heights IL 60411
3.Your Original Country of Origin: USA
4.Age/Sex/Marital Status: 79/M/widower
5.Position Held in Office: Retired
6.Present Occupation: Retired
7.Office Telephone None
8.Residential Tel & Mobile Line: 5-2241
9.A certified Copy of your international passport or any scanned-It is against US Federal Law to scan or copy a USA Passport.
My attorney has prepared for me an affidavit of identity which I am attaching. I trust this will be sufficient to meet the needs of item #9?
I will not be available until afternoon tomorrow. Tuesday Mornings I head over to the community center for a Senior breakfast I am usually back home by noon, but tomorrow we are mourning the loss of one of our regulars. That is the problem when you get to be my age, too many mournings. So anyway, I may not be back until 1 or 2 pm. I trust this will not be an unacceptable delay.
Regards
Josson. |
Well this was disappointing....Josson returned from the Community Center after mourning and was a little disappointed the lad had not gotten back to him.

Dr,
I just returned from the Senior Center. Was a very nice memorial for Gertie May.
Once you get to be my age, you have more friends that are dead than alive.
Anyway I was hoping to hear from either you or my lawyer on this matter?
Ben has already asked me for a retainer on this matter so I assume he will be in touch with you if he hasn't been already to take care of the procurement of the required documentations?
Again my attorney is very expensive, so I trust you will treat this matter with urgency and without delay?
We are not off to a very good start. I expected a reply from you this afternoon.
Please advise soonest. |
The lad's reply was confusing

Things went quiet for a bit...and Josson is already getting charged by his attorney...so a poke was in order....

Dr
My attorney has explain to me that you have not responded to him. I encourage you to please respond to him as he will be advising me in this matter. Please recall that is was you that said I would need the services of an attorney to effect this transaction. He is a very expensive attorney, and he charges me per communication. That means I get a bill for every email he sends you, if you respond or not. I wish to effect this transaction as quickly as possible and so far I have been billed for several emails my attorney has sent to you with no reply.
Please get Mr Pierce what he requires to effect this transaction so that he may take care of the legals and then we can move onto our business. |

Ok So here is where the lad tries to get my attorney out of it
| Quote: |
Dear Mr.Josefus Wilkerson
Thanks for your mail.
Please correct this mistake before we go further; the attorney I meant is attorney here in my country and NOT your own attorney Mr Pierce as stated., therefore tell your attorney that you made a mistake in contacting him to handle this transaction, because it is an attorney here that will get all the approvals from the various ministries before sending the approval documents for your perusal.
However, I have concluded with the attorney, I implore you to write him directly asking him what it will require of him to complete the transaction.
Regards,
Dr. Evans Egobia

Of course I am none too pleased....with the above email or this follow on from the lad

Attn: Barrister Austin Agaranwa Richard
This with great pleasure to write this email to your Chambers in Nigeria. I have been referred to ask for your legal advice and assistance, as I am not familiar with the law or procedures in your jurisdiction for contractual procedures in Nigeria.
In connection with what I need to be informed of the contract procedures in Nigeria and its council in attempting to file our claim with all the vital documents necessary to transfer my payment of the expired contract and how much it will cost me to obtain all the necessary documentation to affect the Release and transfer of the $35.5 million dollars currently with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture of Nigeria.
The contract number is F.M.A / PED / X2038-X192 / 2015
Also, if you can describe me the details of the documentation
I humbly wait for your kind advice
Thank you very much.

Dr,
I have forwarded this to my attorney. I believe he is more than capable of handling this transaction. I await his instructions |
The good Dr responds with
| Quote: |
Sir,
I have received your mail with the content therein.
Well i must say that this will be above your lawyer's ability to handle this fund transaction because he is not an indigene of this country and for your lawyer to come over here will warrant all kinds of investigation from the ministry concerning the payment allocation to know if truly you are the real sub-contractor. That is the actual reason why we must use our local attorney due to the local attorney will be familiar with some officials in the ministry and it will be very easy for him to secure the approvals at a more lower cost on your behalf.
Believe me, if you insist that your lawyer will come down here to handle this matter, it simply implies that you are ready to take care of his flight cost, hotel and logistics never mind how many days he will be residing at the hotel before he begins action.
Therefore, the use of our local is more conducive and highly preferable because he can walk into any of the ministry and meet with whom it may concern for the endorsement of the approval and bargain with him as fellow Nigerians but your lawyer cannot do that because he is a foreigner and everyone will like to swindle a lot of money from him before his request can be accepted.
I await your decision towards this.

Dr,
My attorney is an international practitioner and has conducted business all over the world. I am not sure if my attorney is capable of handling this transaction. WHich is why I need you to communicate with him. OUr first exchange you made it clear that an attorney would be required for this transaction.
My attorney is very expensive and has already invoiced me for emails he has sent to your office that have gone unanswered. I beg you to PLEASE communicate with him, and if this is above his ability or if it makes more sense for your attorney to handle it. That is what he will advise me to do.
I am old and do not understand all of this legal stuff. That is why I hire Mr Pierce. I trust him and do whatever he tells me to do in these matters.
(Of course my attorney was copied here too )
Dr,
My attorney, MR Pierce is an international practitioner and well versed in Nigerian Law.
I would prefer to use my attorney to effect this matter.
Mr Pierce, would you please explain your credentials to Dr Egobia?

Meanwhile my attorney's secretary is on her game. Even when my attorney is in court, I am a priority ...

Dear Dr. Evans Egobia,
Mr. Pie asked me to reach out to you regarding some sort of business dealings you are engaged in with one of our clients, e.g. Mr. Josefus Wilkerson. He instructed me to ask you to have one of your staff forward all documentation pertinent to these business dealings along with a brief explanation from your perspective as to what issues you seem to be facing in bringing said dealings to a satisfactory conclusion.
Mr. Pice will be in Court for the remainder of the day, today, but wants me to express his interest in this case and his anticipation in assisting both our client and you in benefitting from your current business arrangement.
Also, please feel free to ask any questions you may have regarding our part in helping you move forward.

And here is where we are. Perhaps if several of Mr Pierce's clients from the community center Senior Breakfast were to reach out to the Dr he might reconsider allowing BP to represent us after all?
| Quote: |
Sir,
I have received your mail.
Well i am a Chattered Accountant by Profession but my doctorate degree was on Merit. Can your lawyer come down here and walk into our ministry and start applying for the approvals? He doesn't know how we got this over invoiced deal, so it would be better if we use our local attorney to get the necessary approvals. We will only be needing your lawyer once the fund($35.5m) is in your account.
I await your decision towards this.

BP has bought some time for the weekend but of course Josson is impatient.
BP may or may not have told Josson not to contact the good Dr until he is advises but Josson is impatient, old, and maybe a tad senile
| Quote: |
Dr,
I know my attorney's secretary has been in contact with you and he is away for the weekend. I am awaiting his instructions on this matter. He assures me that he is fully capable of handling this transaction and that he will able to work with you and the barrister on this matter to represent my best interest. I understand that he may need to travel to your country to handle some of this in person. While I hope that is not necessary for obvious reasons I am perfectly willing and able to take on that financial obligation for this transaction. It would seem to me, based on what little you have told me thus far that value would exceed cost should that become necessary. But he has explain to me that he is confident that a trip to your country will not likely be necessary as he will simply review and advice me on what your barrister sends over.
Please communicate with my attorney switly completely and without delay. As I mentioned before his services are very expensive concerning these matters. Much more than his standard fee for some reason. But I trust him unconditionally and follow his advise and instruction without question.
Have a wonderful weekend Dr, and I stand by to hear from my attorney on how to proceed with this matter. |

You would think that #1 a lawyer would not be working on Saturday and #2 a lawyer would not be reaching out to the client of another lawyer? Is it possible the good barrister really isn't a barrister?

Attn: Mr.Josson
Sir,
We have acknowledged receipt of your email along side with your funds contract details with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture Nigeria.
Before we can officially give our formal attention to your required services, we will first of all carry out a comprehensive verification exercise to acsertian the true position of the funds with the said Ministry. Please, also bear in mind that some amount of money will be requried from you to facilitate this transaction which i dont know the exact amount untill after our verification.
we shall get back to you by next week Monday.

Of course Josson goes right back to his hired gun

Barrister Garrick,
Please include my attorney in all correspondence concerning this matter. As I explained to Dr Egobia,, I have my own counsel I wish to have effect the legals of this transaction. |
And then Josson realized something....
| Quote: |
You see Barrister,
That is concerning, you don't know the exact amount until after the verification? I pay my attorney a retainer before he does ANY work.
Please include my attorney (copied here) on any further correspondence concerning this matter.
When it comes to legals, I don't shit without his OK |
And neither do any of the other seniors down at the community center |

I think what we have in mind here is the following
BP does pro bono work down at the community center for seniors. Wills/estate stuff/medical proxy etc.
he does so because this is a group of affluent seniors and he discovered after he gained their trust that they would bring these scam emails to him for advise. He found it to be far more lucrative to benefit from these emails than advise is clients that they are bogus.
These seniors trust him immensely and bring any and all legal questions to him, be it to handle a red light ticket, getting a ticket for forgetting their handicapped placard but parking in the handicapped spot, etc...
So when they get a scam email that sounds legit to them, they bring it to him for advice and that advice is what pays the bills |
