I work for a manufacturer of very high dollar household stuff. Yesterday our Customer Service Manager comes into my office and says "I heard through a little birdie that you know a lot about scams. Could you take a look at this email and see if it is a scam?" It took me all of ten seconds to realize that yes, this was a scam. It was a lad wanting to order about $10,000 worth of stuff and have it shipped to him in Finland via a shipping company he designated. The shipping company would pick the goods up at our manufacturing facility, He would only pay with a credit card.

Two things stuck out
- His initial email was a generic "I am interested in purchasing goods from your company" email that could be sent to pretty much any company
- The email address of his shipping company was gmail.

As I explained to our Customer Service Manager, the way this scam works is that we would be expected to prepay the shipping charges to the shipping company, which would be reimbursed to us via his credit card. The card was of course stolen. The shipping company was really the lad. I told our Customer Service Manager to cut off all communication with the lad, so we did not get a credit card number. The point of this thread is to remind us all that while these baits may make us laugh and chuckle it also serves to educate us all as to the various scams that are out there. Scams that can impact our real lives. If those of us on this board don't take the opportunity to educate those around us about the different types of scams and how they work then basically all we are doing here is being dicks to scammers. I think this community is so much more than that.

I wouldn’t presume to speak for Shiver or Rover, but after having conversed with them, I think it’s safe to say they would be happy if there was no reason for Eater or ScamWarners to exist. But, like Jayhawk said so well, that may only be achieved through education.

I agree with bware419ers.

While I have not had to help my company or other companies, I am often approached by co-workers and friends about emails they receive that they think may be scams. Or Craigslist scams, car wrapping, and that sort of thing.

Get back on your soapbox, but also start a thread here so that we can bait him. Several of us enjoy selling these lads brain boxes, floodproof mirror drills, or other nonsense and reporting the resulting black piggies.
