Hi, long time fan, first time poster.

So this happened back in December. I was checking my e-mail and saw that I was being bombarded with spam. I looked through my e-mail and saw that right before the spam started there was an eBay purchase for a treadmill I had not authorized (it appears the thief was spamming my e-mail to try and hide the purchase confirmation e-mail).

Thankfully I was able to contact the seller and stop the item from shipping/cancel the transaction. I also reported it to eBay, Paypal, and Discover.

Now, I still have the address where the treadmill was to be sent. What can and should I do with this information? I would love for some sort of justice to be served, but eBay and Paypal pretty much told me there was nothing I could do. One of the reps told me there are schemes where 1 person hacks the account and orders something to a 2nd person's address, then they give it to a 3rd person to resell it, so they avoid prosecution. Is this true and is there nothing I can do?

Any advice or tips on reporting this, or a way to scambait this person/group would be appreciated.

Sounds like you already handled it well by reporting t it and stopping the shipment. There isn't much to do beyond that. The person who would have received the item might be another victim or person whose accounts have been compromised. Reporting it was the best move. Next would be to make sure you change your passwords for ebay, your email, paypal and other accounts.

Padme, you say that the person who is to receive the item might be a victim too. I can see how an item can be delivered to a different address, but how will the scammer take delivery, without some involvement of the receiving party?

The scammer may have no interest in the actual article, but could have sold it to the addressee of the package in an separate transaction and have already pocketed his cash.

There is also the possibility that the addressee is a victim of a re-shipping scam and think they have a real job shipping items overseas, although a treadmill isn't the type of item that scammers usually go for.

They trick the receiver into thinking it is a legitimate purchase. Usually by means of a romance scam. For example, the scammer says he has a business that sells items overseas for profit. And since the victim and the scammer are "in love" and plan on getting married soon, the victim doesn't suspect that they are sending stolen goods to a scammer. The sad part is that the victim usually pays the shipping fees.

So to be clear, my PayPal and eBay account were compromised, and they purchased this item. I only have the address of where the item was supposed to be sent--which is not my address.

Strange things are known to happen.
A buddy received 7 iPhones in a package, no return address listed.
He attempted to return them, no joy.

After checking his credit accounts and bank, no purchases showed.
So he sold some and kept one.

My brother received a package from Amazon. His name, but another address.

He returned it to Amazon, and as a thank you, Amazon sent him a $100.00 watch.
