Hi guys!
I have recently started using Gmail for my baiting account. A lot of the scam email I receive obiously ends in the spam folder. Now when I want to move it to my inbox, I need to mark it as "not spam".
This leaves me wondering: by doing this, am I telling Google that they incorrectly identified it as a scam? Will this decrease the chance that the next emails from the same scammer to other people will be classified as spam?
I don't want to mess with the Gmail's algorithm which is otherwise really good and this way I could make it less efficient, putting real victims in danger.
This is quite an important thing as I can see that a lot of fellow baiters use Gmail and we might be doing more harm than good! |

I do not know the answer to this for certain, but I think when you mark a message as "not spam" google changes your preferences, not theirs. It simply puts the sender's email among your "trusted senders". Marking a message as spam may tag it for consideration in a black list, but I do not believe it works in reverse.
Also, the reason a message is marked as spam to begin with has less to do with content than one might think. Top reasons for getting marked in the system as spam are things like spoofed-addresses, email from addresses you youself marked as spam, mass emails with tons of people on bbc, email from known spamming domains. Among the content related reasons are phishing email with obvious password-getting features where your marking them one way or another wouldn't change their rank.
Bottom line, I think it's perfectly fine to change your catcher-email preferences to let scam notes in, or just check your spam folder often. |

Thanks, I remember seeing something along the lines of: This email was marked by many other people as spam, therefore it is in your spam folder.
...on Gmail, so unless they changed the policy since then, it still works that way.
Anyway, even if we were wrong and Gmail actually uses the "not spam" reports too, the number of baiters is too low compared to the number of people who get the scam email and move it to spam immediately that it probably doesn't make much difference. |

Those are from my Spam folder, maybe clicking Not Spam does do something, but I'm guessing it would have to be a lot more than one person. |

Those are all examples where marking a message as spam blacklists it.
My reply was about whitelisting, which I don't believe works the same way. |

Easy solution. Leave it in the spam folder of your catcher account. Send a message to the email addy from your baiting account.
ETA:
It's why I use an email client. I can open an email from a catcher and switch between one of my many characters for replies. All without needing to copy or paste.

For my baiting stories, I use Yahoo mail (web application):
You can move any messages from the Spam folder to the Inbox folder ...
- this means only that you want to handle that message.
- you do not change the way that the message was originally perceived (as "spam").
- any other message from the same sender will remain marked as spam.
---------------------------------
If you want to permanent change the status of a one message (as "this is not a spam message"), you have a dedicated marker.
- all messages from that sender will go directly to your Inbox folder.
