Here's a story of a Lad whose attempts at cleverness are backfiring in a spectacular way.

It began thus:

After due consultations and meetings regarding your funds release, our board of directors decided that the funds be made payable through this Finance Company who trade on Stocks & Bonds, Bank Guarantees/Standby Letter of Credits etc, worldwide. This is so because; it was impossible to generate any covering documents in U.K and as such we could not generate any document to back up the funds transfer.
As it is now, the Bond has been placed into the fixed/bonded assets of the Finance Company that trades with Euroclear and triple AAA rated banks in the world and they'll handle the liquidation and onward funds release/transfer. Finally, your urgent email reply will be appreciated in order for us to proceed with this arrangement without further delay
Reconfirm your receiving banking details.

I deployed one of my standard Captain Mal modalities - the matter of his friend who was doing business in Ghana (actually an NOK scam) and died before completing it - and after an exchange about IDs and Q&As I got this:

The funds originated from Ghana but we must do the needful prior to the final release of the funds to you as the authentic beneficiary.
So, we must have to required details in accordance with our code of conduct before final release of the funds will be made.

Contact address.
Contact telephone numbers.
Receiving banking details.
First page of your international passport or drivers license.
Finally it is very worthy to remind you that you must be responsible for the payment of USD12,560.00 being payment for the issuance of the irrevocable payment order which will ultimately guarantee your funds final release.
Make sure that you send the above required information so that we will conclude the verification in the file and advise you on how to send the important fee.
I am waiting for your immediate compliance to enable me serve you better.

I am not supposed to disclose these important and confidential information to you but I am only doing this because time is truly of the essence as you must rise up to the occasion and reconfirm all the requested details immediately so that we will conclude our given mandate within the time that is being given to us.
You must reconfirm the details as indicated below.

Will the Lad try to double down again after these replies?

You are to reply to this office immediately for clarifications on this matter as we shall be available 24 hrs to attend to you and give you the necessary guidelines on how to ensure that your payment is wired to you immediately.
Just also be informed that any further delay from your side could be dangerous, as we would not be held responsible of wrong payment.

The Lad's trying for serious money - either $14,600 (for four fees) or $12,560 ("irrevocable payment order"), which Mal hasn't commented on, so I think he won't give up easily.

It is very important to inform you that we shall be concluding our own verification today and will send to you the bank account details were you will be required to send the fee for the issuance of the irrevocable payment order which will guarantee the funds final release.
You shall be notified as soon as possible.
While I expect your call or mail for acknowledgement of this mail update to enable me update my file records accordingly.

But now you're talking about an "irrevocable payment order" at a cost of $12,560. What is this "irrevocable payment order"? What happened to the other fees?
The other matter is how I became a poxy beneficiary. I need the documentation about how that happened and who decided it, or else you may as well forget about sending the money, because Brian's NOKs will raise hell about it and it will be a fucking lawyer's picnic. Send that documentation at once so I can sure of having it before the money is sent.
Which brings me to something I should have asked before. How much money is being sent? I assumed it related to the deal with Duffour and Essien, but you said that it has nothing to do with them. Please clarify.

After a few days of email exchanges and calls apparently leading up to payday, the Lad finally chose to... well, re-re-re-redouble down with an account of the death of "Brain" that's 90% cut-and-paste from Wikipedia (the italicised bit):

Passengers of the other balloons were treated in hospital for shock on their return to Alice Springs.
The Bureau of Air Safety Investigation (BASI) found that the operator of the upper balloon, the operator of the ballooning company to which both balloons belonged, had failed to give way to the lower balloon as required by the company's operations manual. The investigation report said that the upper balloon was found to be missing the mandatory instrument package and that its pilot had refused to cooperate with investigators. Both balloons were fitted with ultra high frequency radios operating on the same channel, but neither pilot contacted the other.

The above details are purely how Brain Died.
