419eater now discourages cash baiting, burning scammers, and sending long intro emails (since they most likely won't be read). However Shiver did all of this back when he was baiting. Has the nature of the scammers changed, necessitating new tactics, or have we changed to become more "ethical"?

No offense to Shiver, but if he posted some of his baits now he'd be berated a lot for doing "forbidden" things. I'm just a little curious about how the culture of scambaiting has evolved.

Eater has been around for over 10 years and baiters have existed for even longer than that. It is only natural that things change.

Have we changed? Of course we have. Shiver did a lot of things that would nowadays be called unethical, but back then it was the name of the game. First baiters were individuals who replied to lads with more or less success. First organized communities consisted of these people. There were no experts saying what would work, what wouldn't work and what should and shouldn't be done. Baiting is a very young phenomenon and it literally started out of nowhere.

What you have now at your disposal was born from hundreds of correspondences one email at a time. Over the years baiting has evolved from "let's have random fun and see what works" to us pretty much knowing what works and doesn't and what realistically can and can't be done. And also what should and shouldn't be done. As I said in the other thread recently, baiting nowadays is so much more than just baiting, and it has for a long time now resembled real volunteer work rather than an obscure and amusing hobby. That has led to us taking ourselves more seriously than in the past and considering not only how we can harm the business of the lads, but also taking into account how we can do that without even potentially harming anyone else (take sending fake IDs for example.)

Have the lads changed? Sure. The basics are still the same, but the new scripts, new tools and the easier availability of things that used to be more rare or non-existent in the past (mules, websites, constant internet access, smart phones etc.) has made them evolve as well. And they are probably more aware of the "jokers" than in the past too, which is why we don't burn them anymore in the first place. Of course we need to take these things into account as well. When I came here in 2006, no one had even heard of lads using stolen credit cards, for example, or that they could be baited and the information passed to the credit card companies to shut them down. They come up with new scams and methods. We come up with new methods for stopping them. And the circle starts again.

Everything has changed. My first bait boxes were limited to a total of 20 mega bytes of storage. Lads would not bomb out scam email to thousands of potential victims but literally one at a time so they would read a long initial response by a baiter. Their Internet download speeds were so slow that I could keep them busy for a half hour with one cheesecake photo of an adult video actress.

Now we can close their bank accounts and make toast of their credit cards.

Some things never change. A trophy is still an amazing accomplishment as is a safari.

Eater has helped to evolve the "baiting culture" to a huge degree. The baiting that goes on here is more sophisticated that in the past because there are thousands of baiters sharing experiences. Eater is why baiting is what baiting is. This is an ongoing culture of anti-scam being developed.
