Scam claiming to investigate your scam?

Well,

I got an interesting scam email that I don't know if any of you have run in to, but I got a scam email purportedly from the FBI cause they are "investigating me" for illegally obtaining funds from a 419 Scam. LOL

I'm playing along as the scared mugu, so we'll see where it goes. Smile

Anyone else have anything like this?

That script is a frequent visitor to my spam box. It's usually (read nearly always) from Beninois Lads demanding a quick payout.

Ahhh. Gotcha. I honestly never read spam messages until I joined here. No I get rather excited when I see that i have some new messages in that folder. LOL

Hi Bogart21-welcome to Eater.

I really hope you are not replying to this scammail with your real life email address? The first advice we give to new members is to "bait safe"-do not use an email address that is in any way connected to your RL details. If the scammer sent it to your personal box, you may want to think twice about responding.

The FBI scam is pretty common-scammers like to spam multiple addresses which increases the chance they'll find a victim.

Hey there!

Thank you for your concern, but I am baiting safely. I have my fake address all setup and have Firehouse5 as my mentor. When I get spam from my personal box, I always copy->paste it in to my fake email, sanitize and set it up in the response so that it looked like it originated from the fake email account.

I too am a new lover of Spam.

I set up a fake gmail account (not sure if that's the best but I know it's not traceable) and actually fired off a couple of one word answers to a couple of emails in 'Surplus'.

I have received reams in reply to them ! Also, they are quickly passing it around as have my first Spam !

They're asking for ID though. So other than being indignant of sending such personal docs over the internet I may be stuck. I am enjoying collecting their fake id's and docs though !!!

Re your ID-if it's a passport you can say you don't have one if your character is in the US or you sent it in for renewal. If they are asking for other ID, after exchanging emails ("Is my library card ok?"), you can send one of the images in the Baiting tool box, after renaming it "ID.jpeg" or whatever. Of copy a .dll file, and send it renamed. Your scammer will complain that they can't open it and you can tell him it opens just fine for you!

Lots of options-get creative!

Being indignant has bought me some time. So many options. Fun times ahead ! So much on here to look at. I'm going to try the .dll file I think.

I already made up a bank and they didn't even flinch which sort of gives carte blanche for other things.

I never send an ID and it hasn't been an issue as they don't really need it for anything. If they're particularly insistent I just mention that my friend has a scanner that I can use, he works at the police office. That shuts 'em up in a hurry.

That's rarely needed. Once they're off script the ID fades far into the distance.

^^ Very good advice. When first baiting it is easy to get intimidated when lads demand ID. Remember, most lads are interested in money rather than ID collection (though they can use it to authenticate future scams) so will back down on the ID when the prospect of money is dangled at them.

When you feel confident a good ploy is for the friend who is doing the scanning for you (cos you don't have a scanner) to take an unhealthy interest in what is happening - in other words a third party intervention.
