I am only curious because it would be dirt cheap or free to call U.S. numbers, but I've never heard of a U.S. lad before.

The bait Mattaz linked to is certainly the best known example of a US-based lad but there have been a few others.

There are fairly large west African ex-pat communities in Atlanta and Houston, as well as Toronto in Canada. Sadly there are a few scammers among them. Toronto is particularly known for check scams.

The lad that Capone and I safaried in the above-linked bait was obviously very successful. He partnered with lads in Africa but he also ran solo scams. Being US-based gave him unique opportunities to run his scams, notably his specialty of 'wash-wash' scams that entail meeting a victim face-to-face to set the hook.

I regret there was no way for us to get him arrested.

By the way, this is proof that, as a US based scammer, you need to be safe in your scamming technique and not to reveal any personal info to the scammer.

Some years ago, a member of this board used an office fax machine to fax some document to a scammer. He apparently thought he had turned off the function that printed where the document came from on the fax - - but some days later, a man with a West African accent showed up at the office, and asked for the fake name that the baiter was using in the bait. Moral: bait safe!! Scammers are on every continent (except, apparently, Antarctica)

JF - I'm wondering why this was so? There appear to be violations of interstate R.I.C.O. and conspiracy statutes committed throughout the bait.

I'm asking for my own training (and maybe others'). I realize that you had an excellent legal adviser available throughout the bait, and that prosecution would have required a very cooperative U.S. Attorney....

EDIT: Transposed a word

The fundamental issue was that he did not commit a crime. For sure, there was intent. But that would be very, very hard to prove and finding anyone in law enforcement willing to take on such a huge challenge would be near impossible. They are overworked with cases of actual crimes as it is.
