Hello, I am very new to scam baiting, but its seems that signing up to the mugo guestbook worked and I got a few spam, one which I am chatting, a very nice guy although I think he is getting tired of me.

Nonetheless, I have received a spam about a young french lady which her husband died, blah blah, family wants to kill her, blah blah, need money to get out from the country.

I have looked in the headers, and I found the ip, which seems to be legit, what can I do with it? should I try contact the local police/telecom company that a scammer uses that ip?

Hi,

I'm also still a newbie, but got the exact same mail. I already posted it in the Surplus Letters for another baiter to have fun with it.

In the surplus department we always attach the most info about from where the mail was received.
The more pro-baiters will know what to do with the details, if any action is needed.

If it is this one https://forum.419eater.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2233951#2233951 then the Originating IP is in the Ivory Coast and is quite likely an Internet Cafe, and even if it isn't, the police or Telco are not going to waste their time investigating, so there is no point in reporting it.

If your company has its own web site, it more than likely has a static IP. This means that someone tracing your IP will find you. We do not recommend baiting from work since it is more than likely against the company rules.

Honestly, the best things to do are to waste the lad's time with numerous questions and when you get to the money demand, use the modalities you will see in numerous threads to get a bank account out of them

If only the local police and ISPs cared about scammers...

A scammer is too small-fry for most police to be concerned with and (technically) he hasn't committed a crime yet -- he has only *attempted* to scam you, which is not a crime. And nuking his ISP/email addy just causes him a moment of inconvenience and requires him to set up a new email or account, which ironically causes more problems for the folks baiting him/reporting him on scam awareness sites.

If you're interested, your best bet is to get a mentor and start baiting him. The "girl in trouble" scams are fun because, not only can you straight bait them, but you can also fall in love with them (and Valentine's day isn't that far off, so love may be in the air...).

Reading through the baiting threads, you will soon see that good baiters portray whatever character their lad needs to continue wasting her/his time. Just like the lads we bait, the characters we create typically have no relation to who we really are. In fact, the less the character has to your RL, the safer the bait.

I am totally serious, and it makes for a hilarious bait.

Put yourself in the lad's position -- your script tells you to play a girl, so you're playing a girl. You're working with your victim and things are running a bit long, but seem to be going well. Then, your victim falls in love with you. This isn't covered by your script but you don't want to do anything which may tip your victim off so (even though you're completely uncomfortable) you play along.
