I didn't even know this was a thing but I post online a lot and get tons and tons of spam!! I was so curious about the end game I have been baiting a scammer for the past week. I was actually getting bored with all the questions he was asking while posing as a girl interested in dating. In an effort to move things along I said I wanted to meet her and would be willing to buy her a ticket to come see me. I was saying I would buy it waiting for them to take the bait and ask for money so they could "buy it themselves".

I then proceeded to jack this dude around every which way and loose. I actually got this "good Christian God fearing woman" to swear at me. Which of course I said I needed to talk to my church pastor about and they got super sweet telling me not to tell anything. I said "Our secret?" which they were happy to agree to.

I asked for pictures I could easily find in a Google search also like "feet" and so on. I stumbled upon this forum while trying to find fake moneygram info to send them. I actually got them to write out the information to send the moneygram to on a paper since I wasn't getting the text "properly" and kept repeating the wrong name. They sent the picture which I had them do so that I could later ask for "custom pictures" without them saying they couldn't take/send pictures.

Couple questions:

1) They will put up with A LOT!!!! Not so much a question as an observation but how do they not know they're getting played? I assume because to succeed they have to find people that are not very savvy.

2) So what's the end game? I send my $500 via moneygram to their city with the name they give and how do they get it? Don't they need ID on the other end or something? Do they have fake ids or something?

3) Have any of you gotten custom pictures? A hand with your name on it or anything? What's the best "trophy" you can hope to get so I have a goal too?

4) What number do you text from? I shut mine down rather quickly as it was my real cell number but what do you use to stay safe and cover you back side?

5) Is there any real danger with this? I use Linux, a Blackberry, and I grew up in the ghetto so I'm street smart and not going to fall for anything but where is the line with that? I cover myself on good searches and such as a rule anyway but what about pictures, real first name, things like that.

6) Is it possible to get much info on them, email, real name, anything tangible?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm a total noob that fell into this and information is king!

Anyway, you all rock and thanks for the forum, I have a new hobby and I'm excited to play with it and help others. I certainly like the love/dating niche!

Welcome aboard, ScamSpammer! Rule #1 at Eater is "bait safely" and that means no baiting with real life info -- no real names, no actual email addresses, no real phone numbers, etc.

To answer your questions:

1) Yes, they do. Lads differ; some have been baited, some haven't. Most lads think that anyone who responds to them is a good victim so the vast majority of them will put up with anything you throw at them (for some period of time, at least) in the hopes of getting a payday.

2) Not necessarily. If you give them a Q&A with your payment info (or if they know a crooked clerk) an actual ID isn't essential.

3) The best trophy you can hope for is a good, publishable bait. Anything beyond that is just icing on the cake.

4) See Eater Rule #1, above.

5) You are dealing with criminals, so there is always some small amount of danger. Please take care to protect yourself. See Eater Rule #1, above.

6) As time goes on and as they build up trust in you ... maybe.

Hello and welcome! It sounds like you've got a live one, and that's good. But if the lad has ANY of your real life info (especially your real name) you need to drop/block him, yesterday. You can always transfer him to a character you've made up if you want to keep the fun going. As long as the cover story is plausible, it should work.

And let me echo the advice of TLH. Rule #1: Bait safe. Rule #2 Follow rule #1.

Yeah, mentors are good, I should get one if I were you.

Your question 2 deserves a fuller answer. Bait them until they can't see straight, until they are either at the point of being so mad with frustration and lust for money that they realise the error of their ways and go straight - or go quite mad and use any de-education that you give them so badly that they never can perpetrate another scam on an innocent victim.

The forum search facilities, or a mentor will give you an understanding of "de-education".
