I get scam emails through my gmail account now and then. I decided to play with one just to see how long I could string him along. I've been emailing for a couple of weeks now. He's looking for his soul mate. I'm not sure where he's from...he was born in Miami, but then moved to Florida!
I am wondering if anyone has ever succeeded in scamming them?

You said you are getting scam messages through your Gmail account? If it's connected to your real life, it is a bad idea to mess with them. You should check out the stickies and make sure that you practice safe baiting!

I use the gmail for what I think may be junk web sites, which I assume is where they get the address. Nothing important goes there, so I hope it's okay.

I wondered if anyone has ever reversed the scam, and scammed them out of some money.

Your baiting account should be used only for baiting. If you get scam emails on another account, consider it a catcher account, remove identifying information from the headers (and sometimes body), and post them in Surplus and Scamwarners. Don't forward mail from your catcher to your baiting account; answer from the baiting account as if the mail came to the baiting account. The lad won't know; he spams the email to hundreds of thousands of addresses.

We don't extract money from scammers. We cause them to waste their time and money.

Welcome to Eater! You've received some good advice above. One term here, that really makes us cringe is "scamming the scammer." Their goal is theft, to enrich themselves. I like this definition:

While we might utilize some of their techniques, it is not for monetary reward.
