The Strabismus Autobaiter has now passed its beta test, and is just spooling up to full scale operations. You can see how it is doing on a day by day basis here:-

This is the number of replies sent to each of 7 baits. R1 is the first reply to the email from the catcher account, R2 the reply if the lad chooses to respond, and so on. Each lad receives a new bait from a new account with a new character every 3 days, and the bot waits 3 days to respond to each email. A programming difficulty I had was dealing with "anxious lads" who will impatiently sent 5 or 6 emails demanding a reply before the 3 days are up! I had to stop the bot from sending the next 5 or 6 emails from the bait under such circumstances, but rather only respond once to the 5 emails.

The web site is a free "throw away" site for hosting the counter only - all bots and email accounts are elsewhere, of course. I will probably have to replace it a few times, but I will post a new massage each time this happens.

Many thanks to the original authors of the baits - they mostly came from this board and I just made them more generic for machine use. The bot does not sense or in any way process content of emails - it is based purely on the email address from which the spam originates.

The bot also senses which emails are new, i.e. sold from one lad to another. These are added to the catcher account. All incoming emails are carefully inspected by hand to remove ITPs, viruses, non-lad spam and so forth.

Nice to see the progress of your project JBS. I know you have been tweaking it and improving it over time.

I am a bit surprised to see that most lad replies are petering off by the 3rd reply.

How elaborate are your replies? I would think that you could possibly string a lad along further by using very short, confused replies. Simple stuff like

"I am confused by this?"
"Ok who is this again? I have been out of town?"
"Hello this is Bill, was this email intended for me?"
"I think I understand... what should I do now?"
"I get my paycheck on Friday. How much should I send?"
"Now explain this fee again? I am confuse..."
"I will need to ask my Grandson to drive me to the bank"

^^Stuff like that would work regardless of what the lad is telling you in his emails. Just a thought.. maybe you are already doing that in some of yours already.

Actually the petering off just reflects that I wait 3 days before sending a reply, and emails are only counted once they have been sent. So once the pending replies have been sent, this will not be as bad. I do use confused replies in some of the baits, I think I will add more. Thanks for the tip!

Regarding the "anxious lads" you could flag each lad with a timestamp when you reply so the bot always checks the timestamp of the last reply and won't reply until 3 days pass. If the timestamp is null i.e. lads first message it will reply immediately.
