Is the name and address of shipping agent real?

Played along with the a-holes who woke me up with texts at 5am regarding a craigslist ad. Sure enough I got fake paypal notifications and instructions to send a lot of money to the shipper via moneygram.

Ironically I got 'paid' three times in different amounts with instructions to pay the SAME shipping agent.

Since there is a name and address out of state does this individual need to show up to collect? Will Moneygram and or law enforcement play along and sting them? Over $1000 and over state lines is a pretty big nono.

Once done I will post the phone numbers they used to text and provide copy, hoping to nail them

If you got the name and address of someone in the USA to send money to, it is probably a mule. Send the name and address to a mod so that the mule can be warned.

Are you baiting safely? Are you using email addresses and phone numbers that cannot be traced to you?

Gave them a fake email but they texted my cell from the craigslist ad. They caught on that I was screwing with them when I replied that the money was sent. Who should I forward screenshots to?

If the lad can connect your real-life phone number to your baiting character's email address, drop him. If he texted you about an item in the ad, and you wrote to him about the same item, then he can connect it. But if the ad is for a table saw, and you wrote him an email about an Acer Negundo laptop, he can't.

They all dropped off, looks like they hit new ads and I started responding to inquiries with "yes, it is still available, no real buyers just a lot of 419 scammers wasting my time so far".

I took note that you guys expressed concerns about them connecting me to it, is that to prevent them from knowing they are getting duped or do they try to harass people who screw with them?

Didn't know scambaiting existed til I googled this scam but now that I do I may want to play too. I do infosec for a living so call it research Smile

This ties directly to your real life as they have your phone number. These are criminals. Responding to them using your real information is not baiting safe.

Also: be cautious about attachments you receive from a lad! Often Internet cafe computers send malware, with or without the lad's knowledge.

Don't meet your lad in real life. While a few brave baiters have taken photos/videos of their lads in the past and shared them all for our enjoyment, it must be stressed that there is a big risk involved in such activity. Your lad is likely to have other people supporting them and it may be VERY dangerous to come into personal contact with them.

Most importantly, remember your lad is a criminal. You don't need to get paranoid, just follow a few simple rules and you'll be fine.

Security

Think about whether anything you send could link to you. Often people sign up here under a username that with Google and 30 seconds to spare leads to address, name, phone number and sexual preferences of said member. People have sent faxes from their office machine. People have accidentally replied to lads from the wrong email account sending all their real life info in the footer. People have received fake checks at their home address. People have posted their baits on their personal websites registered with all their real info and linked to those sites from 419eater. People host images they post here on their personal webpages, or frequently on sites like imageshack along with pics from their friends and family. People have posted enough personal info about themselves here on this very website that can easily be pieced together in a minute by a sharp-minded lad using the search function. Be aware.

Take a look at the death threats in my and many other member's signatures and you'll get an idea of how some scammers get when things don't go their way. They're really funny when all the lad has to go on is a fake name and address, but wouldn't be so funny if the scammer had enough details to be able to identify you (or members of your family/your friends).
