The infamous Wash-wash scam involves lads selling victims systems that supposedly clean off ink-covered paper currency allowing the victim to convert solid black bills into hundred dollar bills.

I've zero experience with these. The entire premise simply boggles me because I can't imagine the setup.

What argument do the scammers use to:
a) get victims to believe that there are thousands of hundred dollar bills inked black just sitting around awaiting their cleansing?

b) get victims to believe that the scammer needs or wants the victim to clean these off rather than simply doing it themselves and making obscene amounts of money without the middleman?

The latter one truly amazes me given that as far as I know, the same people supplying the supposed black bills also supply the machines and / or ink remover.

Finally, if you have baited this sort of scam, please share with me / us how it went. If you've posted a Wash-wash bait on this site, a link will do.

Thanks.

The wash-wash scam is introduced to a victim when he has been hooked enough by a trunkbox scam that he travels to meet the scammers. They show him the trunkbox full of what they say is black money but is actually just dark construction paper. I don't think it can be baited directly; it's much easier to find the sites offering the cleaning solution and kill them.

Zowie. So essentially they have someone who is already up for victim for life--someone so invested emptionally that he will believe anything that else that lets him go on believing he has not been taken. Even with the setup a victim must be utterly taken in to entertain the Wash-wash pitch. They havebeen shown boxes of clean cash. The black stuff will not feel remotely like actual money and the entire premise wouldstrike anyone as absurd beyond belief on its face. When someone is in the same room as you with a box of black dollars and the means to clean them, why on earth do they need you at all?

This is so friggin sad for these poor victims. Chances are that they are nearly as difficult to warn and help as some romance scam victims.

Scammers are such filth.

I standard-baited a wash-wash scammer for a couple of months a couple of years ago. I didn't save any of the emails because it seemed so ordinary. It was the usual stuff: send him money and he promised to send black money and magic wash-wash chemicals. I do recall bargaining with him after seeing the prices on the various scam web-sites. I don't remember why the scammer said he needed to export the black money. Something about it being illegal in his country.

I view all scams as having a spectrum of obviousness. At one end are financial advisors who are selling stocks for a 1% fee, saying they can beat an index fund that has a 0.1% fee, despite all evidence to the contrary. In the middle are the Ponzi schemes that promise 20% per year returns. At the most obvious end are people that promise to send a trunk full of cash. Where does the wash-wash scam fit? Who knows...

The scam basically works like this. A lad says he has all this money in trunk boxes that was dyed black usually to sneak it in to the country through customs. The scammer says he needs a "cleaning solution" to remove the dye and tells the victim if they help him by buying the solution they will get a share of the money. Typically this involves an in person demonstration where the lad shows how this works from samples of the bills and solution which is just faked by the lad. So the lad cant just wash the money himself because he does not have the money to buy the solution that is where the victim comes in.

When I started baiting, these were regarded as being some of the more dangerous lads, as victims were always encouraged to travel to the lad's country to see the process for themselves first hand. It usually involved some quack chemistry and deft legerdemain, that could include a cheap device known to magicians as a money making machine.

Money Making Machine Trick

Many were taken in. And there were reports of victims disappearing or getting a beating if they didn't come through with the money.

It works kind of like alchemy 'worked'.

It typically starts after the trunk box/ consignment scam has run its course. The victim is either reluctant or unable to pay any more and needs some, or more, convincing. So they're taken by the scammers to get the trunk box full of their money at which point they can see their trunk box exists, but the contents are just black construction paper cut to size and lightly covered with talcum powder. The victim is encouraged to pick any note at random for the scammer to clean with the small amount of chemical they have on them.

With a little sleight of hand the note the victim selects is switched with a real note coated in glue and iodine, and cleaned in front of them with water and vitamin C.

The real note emerges and the victim is hopefully convinced. (lead has changed into gold!)

They are told the cleaning agent needed is SSD solution, vectrol paste or any other name they're trying out, and they need a few litres to clean the entire trunk box full.

Probably the scammers they are already involved with will initially supply them with the 'chemicals' , or will pass them on to associates who can, but regardless of what or how much chemicals the victim applies, they will never be able to change their lead into gold, or black notes into real notes.

Eventually the victim may decide to look elsewhere for new suppliers and other cleaning agents to clean their money.

This is where the websites, videos on youTube and any form of online advertising you can think of comes in, to further reassure the victim that this 'problem' and these chemical solutions exist, and that there's a lot of companies that specialise in this area.

Depending on the group behind the website, there's four options really.

1 - They may simply take money from the victim and send them nothing.

2 - They may take the money and send an amount of fake chemicals.

3 - They may send a 'technician' with chemicals and/or cleaning machine, sometimes for advance fee and/or percentage of the total.

4 - Arrange for the victim to travel to them to have the money cleaned. This is the potential kidnap/ransom one.

For baiting, you really want to find a company or lad offering the third option, and even when you do it's not easy to bait. They are typically used to dealing with ground down victims who offer little to no resistance by the point they become involved, so serious straight baiting is what is going to get you furthest.

That being said it's not impossible either, these were from one company I baited last year after they found their technicians passport on SW and I nuked their site.

TL;DR - It works kind of like alchemy and they are definitely worth baiting.

I remember that one or two years ago we "raided" alibaba and similar websites identifying and reporting sellers of wash-wash chemicals. I suppose they are just for people that are already invested in this kind of scam, because I doubt that the average Joe will buy a few grams of Vectrol Paste, Tubi-Magnetic or what-not. But yeah, this sounds like the very last step of a trunkbox scam, with really invested victims.

Unfortunately, this really is no different than the guy in the cheap suit selling victims any get-rich-quick scheme, from internet business to gambling "strategy," or the 50 pounds overweight man or woman selling the "weight loss without dieting or exercising" plan. You would think that the target would look at the seller and realize it doesn't make sense, but so many don't.

I will often seek out sleazy weight loss sites for "before" pics for my profiles, and in looking for a good choice of a scam product, often find myself reading the real discussions, reviews, etc. It's actually quite sad and disturbing. Many of the people posting are unhealthy, both physically and mentally, and have become serial victims--jumping from one scam to the next in hopes of finding that magic cure. They've tried every fake product out there--when one fails, they move on to the next. Some aren't unhealthy but simply have unrealistic goals--they are aspiring to a weight their body just is not designed for. They have convinced themselves that there is a magic product out there that you can sprinkle on your food so you stop eating; or some pill that speeds up their metabolism that makes them burn triple the calories while sleeping, because if the product doesn't exist, they have to acknowledge that their goals may be unrealistic; they are at least partly responsible for their own situation; and that they may never succeed at losing that weight.

When it comes to wash-wash, you are often dealing with a similar mentality.
Your average victim may be struggling just to survive, or he may have some money, but an unrealistic goal (e.g. a million dollars in the bank when he/she only makes minimum wage.) Some part of the victim may realize the goal is unrealistic, but he/she is looking for a reason to believe it is possible. The scammer is filling that need. They are telling the victim that not only is his goal reasonable, but he will help them to make it happen. The scammer offers hope, validation, all those things that the victim desperately needs. The victim is so caught up in the emotional angle that he/she just can't see the practical side.
