Hi all,

I really did not know there was such a thing as scam baiting until today. I knew some people had fun with scammers now and then. I had some fun now and then, but never really tried for long. A few weeks ago I got one on Facebook and since it was immediate response, I played along for a while. It was hilarious actually. So the next email scam that came in, I decided to play along and see what happened. Now I have discovered forums (such as this) and this whole big world.

Right now I have gotten to the point where he wanted me to send money via W.U. I gave some excuse and said I needed his bank account details. He provided it. :-O So, now what do I do? He is pretending to be 2 people. 1 is a U.S. Army Sargent in Afghanistan and needs to move millions of dollars bla bla bla, you know the story. The other (same guy, different name, obviously) is the "diplomat" in charge of the "shipment". While the Sgt tells me how much he loves me and wants to build a life with me the diplomat wants me to pay a fee to release the shipment. Of course, I am not doing that but not sure if I am just bored with him now and want to stop or keep going. I was thinking of continuing.

My question is, is there an agency that these people can be reported to? I have his cell phone number and his bank details. Is there a way to report him? Or is the only end game here just to waste his time as long as possible?

Thanks for any info and advise.

Bonney

Send the bank details via PM to any Mod (their names are in green), then string him out for a few days so the mod can get the account shut down.

Now would also be a good time to read the stickies. Are you baiting safe?

Thanks! Will do.

I'm new to scam baiting, but I am not new to the Internet by any means. He got a fake name, address and a Google Voice number from me. I only emailed from a throw away Gmail account.

He seems to be in India, I checked IP address. Then the bank details he gave were also in India so I really think that is where is actually is. The phone number he gave I believe is his real cell phone, although I have not called it, I did find it online attached to another scam.

BonneyDoon - to reiterate what UN has said above. It sounds like you have responded to a message to your real life account on facebook? If so you should drop that bait immediately. The number one priority here is the safe baiting ethos. There should be nothing at all that can link your baiting persona to your real life.
As UN said, take a look through the stickies and see if you want to continue baiting. With regards to reporting the scammers - there's very little that will get acted on by law enforcement agencies. We are here to waste their time so that they don't have as much time to spend on real victims and, where we can, report any bank accounts or credit cards they may use.
Have a look around and see if you want to continue ...

He received NO genuine information from me. I did not contact anyone via Facebook. What I said was the first scammer I had any fun with was just someone on Facebook. They sent a friend request trying to look like an old forgotten school friend. All I did with them was act dumb and pretend I thought they really were an old friend. Nothing further. I just kept asking them how Jim was doing these days, etc etc. Then I blocked them. This guy is in no way related to the FB one. I did not "bait" the Facebook person, and they never got any info from me, nor did they ever know I was on to them. They thought I was just an idiot who really thought they went to school with me.

This guy was via email. An account I do not use for real email.
This guy was the first time I actually played along to see how far I could get.

And I got his bank account and don't know what to do with it. If nobody (or agency) will do anything with that info, I guess I won't bother trying to report it.

Report any and all bank/CC info to a mod, it WILL get acted upon. The mods are often popping in and out. If you look at the bottom of the main forum index, you will see who is online. When you see a mod (the name is in GREEN online, PM said mod with the details, including a quick description of the type of fraud involved.

No one is is criticising you BonneyDoon. It's just that anyone who starts out baiting on their own first of all may be doing so in a way that could enable a scammer to retaliate, and we don't like scammers to ever to have the satisfaction of that.

Making yourself cast iron safe is very simple and easy but it may be things that don't occur to you and the people here have been doing this for many years. I've had baiting accounts swamped with mail by an unhappy scammer and they can unload hundreds a minute which doesn't hurt one bit if it's a throwaway baiter account, but not so if it's a personal account.

Scammer bank accounts are very valuable and the mods have contact with banks/law enforcement who will deal with them. The value of this cannot be over emphasised though you'll never get feedback, you just record a pink piggy in your sig line as I have.

Before I retired from a major UK bank staff had a legal obligation to report suspicious accounts and transactions. The aim is to get them shut down so that they can't be used in future but law enforcement may prefer to monitor them depending on what is uncovered.

It's not impossible that accounts reported by members reveal much more than you know about and perhaps even terrorist connections, because many terrorists use fraud and scams to finance their activities.

As my background is banking my blood boils to see criminals using bank accounts in scams and I cannot emphasise enough how important it is to report them. The past year I concentrated on nothing else but doing that in respect of UK ad scammers.

Keep up the good work.

Hi Bonnydoon,

I'm one of the folks in green who you can send the account info to who can report it to our banking connections. Congratulations on earning your first Closed lad accounts-you can put it in your signature line. We don't hear back about what action is taken but your scammer might suddenly tell you to use another account, that there's a minor problem with the first one. Then you know action was taken.

Where to go next? Well, in RL, transfers take three to five business days. So maybe something happened on the way to the bank-a car accident. Or maybe you do electronic banking-the servers at your work place were down. After about a week or two and when he starts complaining that the money didn't arrive-you can tell him his account was "flagged" and you don't know why. Maybe another account might work?

You are wasting their time and got real useful information. That's what we do here.So have fun, bait safe and welcome.

Thanks everyone. I have passed on the banking details as advised.
I can string this fool along a while longer. Smile

I might sound a bit green, but I am only green to baiting per se, but I am not green to internet security. I use VPN, and Tor and throw away accounts etc. I know how to be safe, even if I do not know all about this "hobby". I at least knew enough to give him nothing at all.

I'm super glad to know that the bank account info may actually be useful.

The guy is an idiot. I keep calling him by the wrong name and he doesn't seem to care, or notice. I am surprised he's not realized I know what the game is. But no. He just thinks he's going to get his $$ from a 68 year old retired woman. Disappointment is a bitch. Wink

It's impossible to emphasise the significance of bank accounts used in fraud. Maybe he's a small time scammer but a small time scammer with a bank account is a menace to society and he'll use it any fraud or crime that earns him money.

Criminals frequently try to recruit 'dupes' to use their bank accounts because in the West, if the scammer loses his bank account he's 'dead in the water' if he loses his own. You can't receive and cash pay cheques or even government benefits and risk getting 'blacklisted' by banks.

In the UK you can get up to 10 years in prison for using your bank account in fraud and, though that's rare, I came across one who got 12 years.

We and you may only see the 'tip of the iceberg' of what's gong through the account and though the scam you're seeing may be small, it could lead to something much bigger, but just one small scam is enough to get an account closed.

I have learned a great deal in just a few hours reading the stickies and posts on the forum. Thanks to everyone for this crash course. I'm glad I found this place before I went on for much longer with this guy. Now I know what not to do - before I made any mistakes.
