I'm in the process of being scammed. Please help

Hello. I am currently in the process of being scammed. Unfortunately I've already lost some money since I did not realize right away I was being scammed. It's what I have discovered to be the "third party transfer of funds" scam. My scammer does not yet know that I'm on to him. I've reported this to local authorities, Western Union, and the ic3.gov web site but have been told there's nothing really they can do other than to file a report.

While I'm happy to just waste this person's time, a poster on Reddit said he does scambaiting regularly and even knows a person in international banking who can freeze a scammer's bank account. I messaged this person but his account hasn't been active for about a year.

This guy has sent me a fake check and wants me to wire money to him via Western Union. Is there anything I can do besides just sending him a fake tracking number for the transfer? That will only waste maybe an hour of his time and then he'll probably figure out that I'm on to him.

Any advice, suggestions, help would be much appreciated.

I don't want to go into many details on here but feel free to message me. I have lots of emails to prove I'm being scammed by this person.

Hi sbcpunk,

whatever you're doing with this scammer, stop. He has your real life information. It is not safe. I'm very sorry that you had this happen but block any phone call, ignore or block his emails. If he has your banking information, go to your bank and have your account number changed.

You may also want to visit our sister site, ScamWarners who specializes in dealing with victims. If you post full header, the scammer's email address and scripts, other victims can find the information.

I can't emphasize this enough-further communication with the scammer is a bad idea. If you have his banking info, you can PM a mod (folks in green) and they can report the account.

Fortunately he does not have any of my personal banking info which is one reason I fell for this, because I was not asked for info like that. Of course, I don't have his banking info either. I've heard of cases where the victim (or potential victim) was able to get the banking info of their scammer, promising to wire funds to them directly, because these scammers are so eager to collect.

The short story is, your money is gone. Scamwarners will advise you of what to be aware of in future with recovery scams.

Thankfully you realised before losing too much.

Hi sbcpunk, welcome to Eater. I'm sorry that you've been scammed, but at least you know now and you can prevent further loss. As everyone has said so far, www.scamwarners.com is a good place to go - you can report the scammer and connect with others who have also been scammed.

Remember that even though he does not have your real life banking details, he still has your email address.

I'm sorry this has happened to you. I'll echo what has been said above. Drop ALL communication with this scammer and send his details to scamwarners.com so that other people can know it is a scam.

If he sent you a check, then he has your real life address.

I'd ignore both of the above individuals - if the poster "does scambaiting regularly" then he'd know that neither he or this "person in international banking" have the ability to randomly freeze people's bank accounts.

If you get a bank account pass it to one of the Mods here - they have much better contacts than random people on Reddit (but still can't guarantee to get the account closed).

Scamwarners is a great place. Even if a victim doesn't know of it and just Google's their scammer they will see it there and they can read about it. So the more that is on it the better.

Drop him.... and ALL the above advice has been good.... no one has a friend in international banking who can get something frozen. Nice claim but so many independent baiters seem so full of themselves. On here they'll tell it like it is, no frills, no promises.

Now you are here take a look around. It's important to know you are not alone in falling for clever words. Anyone can be taken in and are. So, maybe take a look around and read and maybe have a bit of a chortle ! Sometimes scammers come up against people that make them wriggle.

The hard thing will be putting this behind you. So easy to say, so hard to do. You won't be losing any more money and you now know more information.

Please post on Scamwarners. It is vital we get as much information out there as we can and people like you are so important in this. I am glad you realised now and looked around. You may just help someone else in the same boat as you from losing more.

If you have the scammer's original email post it in the surplus letters forum and we'll keep him busy so he can't catch anyone else out.

I wholeheartedly agree with everyone else here. As CB notes, post his original email to you in the Surplus Emails thread, prefaced by a note that you've been personally scammed by this dirtbag. Experienced scambaiters will undoubtedly exact some Eater revenge.
