Hi folks.
I'm working on a project and Google has either failed me or just completely overwhelmed me....one of those two.
Does anyone here know what type of uniform would have been worn by US Navy Seaman/low ranking enlisted, just out of training, while traveling either on leave or en route to their first duty station circa 1972?
I was an Army guy and know diddly squit about Navy uniforms. |

Yes, but they wouldn't have been worn except when traveling to their ports of call or on leave.....although what they would wear while on shore leave at a port would also work. |

This uniform along with the "Dixie cup" white was always proper when traveling on orders. The National defense ribbon would have also been authorized at this time. ( Vietnam )
Depending on the time of year and location the dress white or tropical white uniform may have been worn. |

FYI in 1979 they changed over to a blue shirt, ball cap and bluejeans for work and the "hey I'm a bus driver" dress uniform of black pants, white shirt, black hat.
Which cost a bunch of money.
And then in the 80's they switched back to the crackerjack dress uniforms.
Which cost a bunch of money.
I ain't bitter...

I searched for US navy uniforms in the 1970s and all I got were lots of pictures of JC and some of his friends.

I do not know if you need this degree of detail, but in cold weather the sailor would have worn a dark blue (black) peacoat also. |

Thank you, Nigel. I don't think I need it for this. Just needed to get the uniform right.
Thank you everyone for your help!
B8er, it was very nice for you to show your love for the Village People.....they need their fans, I guess. |

Tsnerd Sorry If this sounds too obvious but can't you just contact the US Navy archive website & ask what the dress uniform for naval ratings were @ 1972. I'm sure they must have records /pics of this? |

Smiling. Yes, come to think of it. It didn't occur to me and my brain was probably mushed by looking at Google.
I will do this in the future, though |

When I was in the Navy, the time of year also was important.
(White Vs Blue)
We still had the option to wear the obsolete 13 button flap front blue pants.
Several jokes were tossed off regarding those pants.
But as I recall, they did give me my own oar, and I attended school on canvas sail repair...
I was part of that first "Expeditionary Force" to Tijuana.. Got my Purple heart there. (Still have the rash though) |
