Thought some of you might find this interesting. The police in Cotonou is referred to as 'Gendarmerie Nationale'. The link for Interpol was on their website but no contact links for assistance! I could have missed it as it is all in French. I guess the last line here is referring to contacting a cop walking down the street!

The following is from Interpol....

Fraud

Different types of fraud include confidence tricks, lottery fraud and advance-fee fraud (including so-called Nigerian Letters or 419 Fraud), as well as insurance fraud, tax avoidance, offshore investment scams, marriage fraud, pyramid schemes and payment card fraud.
These crimes often have an international dimension and are committed through a variety of media, for instance by the Internet, telephone, fax and post.
Sophisticated social engineering techniques are carried out on the Internet to trick people into revealing personal data, banking details and passwords. One of these techniques is “phishing”, in which fraudsters create fake communications – such as emails, instant messages and pop up windows – that may appear to come from a legitimate source.
INTERPOL's activities
At INTERPOL, we are fighting fraud through several projects which aim to gather information, build up networks between law enforcement bodies and seek possible cooperation with the commercial sector, such as in a current private sector initiative against lottery scams.

INTERPOL is aware of emails circulating on the Internet from fraudsters claiming to represent INTERPOL and asking for personal or financial information.
They may imply that they are trying to verify information, or protect you. They may also include a threat that you will be considered a criminal if you do not comply.
INTERPOL does not request personal information from a member of the public by email. Our work is always done through national police officers.
If you receive an email from someone claiming to represent INTERPOL, requesting personal information or bank account information, you should ignore it and treat it as spam.
You should not reply to the message, and you should not provide personal or financial information.
If you have provided information in relation to one of these messages, you should report it as a crime to your local police.

I like that "Email fraud abusing the INTERPOL name" is both items 1 and 4. Must be quite the problem.

Sure... BIG PROBLEM!!! Victim sends $500. to Western Union. Interpol gets 60%, Police get 50% of what's left, Western Union guy gets 40%..... Taxi guy gets $25. for 2/way trip from Lagos, Nigeria. Scammer ends up with 15 bucks, buys himself a nice lunch... and writes another email scam. Everyone is happy ... except the victim!!!

Any scammer using Cotonou that writes English, or something close, has to be from Lagos or somewhere close where English is the primary language. Cotonou is primarily French, Fon, Mina, Aja and Yoruba. No English! *** Unless there is a 4th split.... someone with English ability who is paid to write these damned emails!! With that said, the scammer may end up owing money... but then they are pretty stupid individuals!

Did you mean "owing"? Far from it anyway. Don't underestimate them for a minute. Also, a scammer will never end up out of pocket unless something goes seriously wrong and he is lead wildly astray by some devious cartel of miscreants. See also ... damn near every thread in here Wink

Bware.... I'm very aware that scammers are from all parts of the globe. The initial post refers to 'Benin Cotonou'. I am talking only about a scammer from that region. Nothing more. Thanks for your input.

The text of the original post comes from the real Interpol website, so where does the "Muffin from Lagos" and the Benin connection come from? Or is this the text of a mail that was received?

B8er.. thanks for that. I confused this with my first post. Scammer is from
Cotonou. I made the necess. change. That's what led me to their Police Dept. regarding this post. The Interpol text is mentioned as being from Interpol. And I am just as confused now as the moderators. How many of you are left anyway? I'm new and have much to learn from you guys. Thanks again.

Google Translate is wonderful tool and many scammers know how to use it, not just for writing to their victims in their own (non-English) language, but also those from non-English speaking countries.

Just because the scammer is from Benin and writing English, don't assume that he must have come from one of the surrounding English speaking countries. He could be an educated national or using translation software, or even a script that has been sold on by other scammers and was originally written by an English speaker.
