Way back at the dawn of time, one of my characters started correspondence with a lovely fellow, concerned with the unfortunate circumstances involving an Engr. Wilson, his wife and their two children who unfortunately lost their lives in a ghastly car accident along Warri Port Harcourt Express road.

My first email from the scammer was received ten years ago today and went something like this

Thanks for your quik reply, I will like you to be a friend after we might have finish this business. infact I will be very glad if you will send to me your telephone/your fax number to enable me discuss with you on phone I hope this will make the easy communication. As soon as this is done I will then send all the documents concerning this transaction. you should keep this on your self

Since then there have been hundreds and hundreds of emails exchanged, and my main character has really been through the wringer: an early chop, death (which turned out to be faked), stolen parcel of expensive watches, arrested any number of times, stolen identity, beaten and robbed on the streets of Paris, jailed in China, indoctrinated into a cult and who knows what else.

And now today I have received a kindly message from the same original scammer (or, at least some fellow who is using the same name and knows enough of the back story to be plausible).

Quote:

Are you back from china for the family festivals?
I have been waiting to read from you since,i hope there is no problem with you.
I hope to read from you as soon as possible.

That means I've had this bastard on the hook for ten years.
Now it's totally a cheat in sandtimer terms, because I've let him dangle in the breeze for months at a time, on a regular basis. And there are two gaps of more than a year (one when my character "died" and another more recently, when I baited myself into a corner).

But I am proud of this anyway, as an example of pure grinding drudgery that, added up over time, has surely added some measure of inconvenience and unhappiness to these lads' lives.

I dunno, Firehouse...you may be technically cheating, but with that amount of time I reckon you would still earn at least several sand timers by simply counting together all the lad's time you have wasted. So here's a cheers for you, Sir, for this impressive achievement. beers!

On the downside, it makes me oddly sad to see that we have a confirmed lad who has been scamming for this long. I don't know if he does it on the side of some other business, but clearly it must have been providing him some sort of income if he is still willing to spend his resources on it. Sad

Even with periodic breaks in the bait, that's still an epic achievement! I don't think anyone in the history of Eater could match it. I can only imagine how invested your lad is to still keep hanging on after so many years and so much grief. Thumbs up

Did you do all of that with just the one character? If so, that is incredible. Hell, it would be incredible even you used a whole army of characters. Well done.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement.

In this case, I'm pretty sure the lad has stuck around because he is pretty certain that I made a payment at some point, to an interfering lad barrister I invented early on who had some inside information about the deal. Years later he still uses my sunk costs as a reminder that I should get my act together and finish the deal.

@Big X: I added a couple of characters at various points in the bait but they played very minor roles (in part because I didn't use them effectively... it just got too complicated for me to keep track of). Mostly I prefer my secondary characters to exist offstage only - their involvement is just reported by my main character.

Well, that is something. Even though Shorty and Turd have been in hook for years that is still something.

I wonder if it would be possible to use that lad in some way? Target him with a masbait or maybe try to find out if he would be gullible enough to travel somewere.

@Leka, Thanks! I would dearly like to award him some more misery but by now I think he is not very keen on doing a lot of hard work for my character. And for good reason!

Indeed, I am not sure whether he is involved in any other kind of scams. A couple of months ago I did an extensive search for all the phone numbers and email addresses I've corresponded with previously on this bait, and found no evidence of anything current.

HOWEVER, I found a 2013 scamwarners post using the same IP address he is currently using to write me (41.190.3.107) and there are many other examples of scam formats in the adjacent IP range (41.190.3.100 - .120). This may well be a cafe that is infested with lads rather than just my guy.
I do have some devious thoughts as I think I do have the original scammer's real name......
