The following is an exerpt from a message I received from the Better Business Bureau on 9/27/14. "Universal Bank's West Covina, CA checks were being used in a mystery shopping scam to lure individuals to deposit the checks (counterfet items) into their account, perform mystery shopping at K-Mart or Walmart & return the majority of the funds in form of a money order or to wire to another individual named on the shopping scam letter. Universal Bank reported the scam in 2013 to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and a Counterfeit Cashier Check Alert was generated by the OCC AND BROADCASTED THROUGHOUT THE BANK NETWORK. The checks range from $1,860 to $1,985 and the remitter's name is listed as Richard Anderson. This is documented mail fraud scam. "
The above communication was in reference to a report I made to the BBB when I received what I thought was a legitimate check for $1, 985, under the auspicies of a person who I later discovered was a scammer. I cashed the check and two days later the bank notified me the check was forged. |
