Hello all...

After stalking the Eater forums for a few weeks and learning some basics of baiting, I've begun amassing a toolkit, building characters and scripts and such and I've finally decided to surface and introduce myself.

My real life work is in IT which means that as far as baiting is concerned I'm familiar with email headers, IP geo-location, whois, web design, VOIP, telephony, photoshop, etc. It also means I spend an inordinate amount of time educating users about 419 and other scams (even today I had a user send me a spear phishing email out of suspicion).

Anyway, as there appears to be no mentor available to me, I'm hoping the community at large can offer some answers.

1) My understanding is that baiters set up a "catcher" account with which to collect 419 emails. My question is whether or not baiters continue to use these addresses for the actual process of baiting or do the email get forwarded to a second account from where the actual baiting is conducted? I've read that scammers are wise to popular email services such as gmail, etc. Are there any services you would recommend I use that won't arouse suspicion? I'm sure I can come up with a workflow of my own, but I figure I'd better query those with more experience about best practices.

2) It would seem to me that any marginally intelligent lad would study baiter methods. So my question is this: do the methods demonstrated on the Letters page still work? If so, would it be appropriate for me to adopt these "modalities" and others for use with my own characters (obviously I'd develop my own resources and scripts)? If not, can you point me in the direction of some modalities that are more effective?

3) Does anyone know where can I get an anonymous postal address in Canada? If not, can you point me in the right direction for acquiring one?

4) I'm thinking of using a Skype number for phone calls. Has anyone tried this?

Anyway... please forgive the lengthy post - I just needed to get these few questions out of the way before I continue working.

I believe you have to make at least one post before signing up for a mentor.

There are many of us using Skype to bait. It is an excellent resource.

Gmail is still fine to use. Another good one is hotmail.

You may use the modalities posted in this forum unless there is a specific "Do not use", because it was accepted in the past but is not condoned now.

Postal Address in Canada, eh? You might ask Pastor Frank.

First off, give the mentor application another try - you need to have made a post to apply, so it should work now.

1. Yes, it is best to keep the catcher and your baiting accounts separate, just so you can keep track of your baits more than anything. Scammers also don't care what email you use - if they ignored Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo then they'd be missing out on large numbers of potential victims.

2. A tiny proportion of lads would understand what baiters are and what we do - the whole concept of doing something for no gain is totally alien to them. But, they do know there are "jokers" out there who waste their time. Best thing to do is start of by playing it straight, be a victim (you can be a dumb victim, but as long as you look likely to pay they'll stick with you).

3. One of our Canadian members such as Pastor Frank can probably answer this.

4. I make Skype calls, but don't receive them - I'm not sure how much personal information they would want to set up a number for incoming calls.

Thanks for everything.

I read the links and the good news is that so far I seem to be on the right track. I have no visions of grandeur (that said... who doesn't have a nice carving as a goal?), so far I've mostly been enjoying the psychology of baiting.

I also got hooked up with a mentor.

I don't have a catcher. (I tried, but got practically nothing.) I post in Surplus scam emails that I get in my RL account, running them through a sed script to delete personal information.

I have several accounts for my characters, one for my dollar chopper, and one for reporting fake sites. Catcher accounts should be separate from baiter accounts. Baiter character names, one's username at Eater and SW, and one's real name should have no resemblance to each other.

I receive bait calls on Skype, but don't make them. There are baiters who have several Skype numbers in different countries and call lads from them. Look up the Scammer Saturday recordings in the audio forum.

I use skype all the time. All of my skype info is fake on both of my accounts. One thing to keep in mind is that you can't change your username once you sign up. You can change the display but your user name is always visible as your skype account name. For this reason, I have an account with a gender neutral name that I can use for any number of characters and a separate account that is the name of the character I bait with the majority of the time.

Welcome! All ideas/answers above are solid input from solid, experienced baiters.

My two cents/emphasis:

As B8er said, don't use your catcher for baiting. It'll get messy in a hurry.

As Padme said, use general independent names. JSmith can be either Julie or John as the situation demands. Singular accounts make book keeping much easier.

I'm sure you'll get plenty of help from you mentor but if not everyone else here is more than willing to answer any you post in a thread!
