So I have a straight bait going so far, and I've managed to get the lad off script a few times, though mainly through minor annoyance then hard effort. A slow approach is a way to get a solid hook methinks.
Anyway, right now the bank trying to give me the loan has asked me to print, sign, and scan a document. So at first I said I sent the document, with no attachment. Simple enough. Now I've stalled saying my computer crashed and I need them to send it again. That said, do you think I could manage to convince the lad that he'll have to send a paper copy to my character's address? That would cost him some time and money wouldn't it...especially if I didn't receive it.
A nickel for your thoughts (since they've done away with the penny)? |

A scanned filled-out form, unlike a scanned passport, is not something a lad can reuse on other victims, so it's OK to eventually send him the filled-out form.
*You don't have a scanner (in RL a lot more people have printers than scanners, I think) so you have to go to Kinko's to scan it. You can't do that till Friday because you're working at sea.
*Edit the file in a hex editor and change a few bytes just where the part you fill in starts.
*Save it as PNG, then edit in a hex editor and exclusive-or five bytes in a row with edb8832080. It will pass the CRC but then be undecodable. The lad will insist you save it as JPEG (which is the wrong format for scanned documents, but the lad is computer-illiterate).
*You have no access to a scanner at all. Here's the info in plain text.
You can fill it out in the Gimp, if you don't actually have a scanner.

Introduce new characters! It will add complexity and complications to the bait. For example, your original baiting character's wife/husband/lover/significant other finds the e-mails, and wants to 'take over' the transaction. This might involve murder.
Or, original characters dies (possibly by murder) or has a major health problem (hit by a car on the way to Western Union) and his personal secretary or executor has to take over the transaction - and start back at square one.
Remember - each character needs to have his/her own agenda and his/her own unique set of psychological issues. |

Thanks for the input everyone! I don't feel confident in introducing a new character just yet. But I really love the tool you gave agnomen. He's going to be getting a 9.5mb file. That should be fun.  I really hope he has dial-up, because it will take him all day to see that file. |
