Hello, Eaters!

I found your site during a search for 419 scams to show my wife, who's kinda new to the web (we're in our late 50s - I'm a professional geek, she's a n00b) exactly what a Nigerian 419 scam is. She couldn't believe anyone would fall for such -um- garden soil enrichment, let's say. (Haven't fully read the T&Cs yet, but I ain't about to break the usual & customaries.)

I'm a former investigative journalist, now retired from that world and writing a column for my own amusement. If I could write fiction, I'd be writing a book, but there's another story.... And stop nagging me about it, would you? Jeez... some people....

Right now, I've got a scammer who seems to have swallowed my hook. I'm on the 5th or 6th exchange with him/her/it and playing helpful-wannabe but dumber than a stick and boastfully proud of it. "She" started off with "My dear," I replied something like "Huh?" Response came back to "Beloved." I replied "Wow, I'm really making progress, considering I'm not even making an effort! I wish this worked in clubs!" And I'm working from there. heh-heh-heh..... javascript:emoticon(' Twisted Evil

She told me her father died and all the money malarkey, and gave me his name. Turned out to be the name of a well-known African musician who's still alive and touring. I told her I was impressed with his music, and by the way, please send me a color scan of your passport page and your US Visa page.

She told me she was literally living in bondage and had no passport, so I replied Wow, how do you manage to access the Internet, then? BTW, you will NEED a passport from your govt and a Visa from the States.

She told me to contact (you're going to LOVE this one) a Professor Goodluck Robinson at Citibank in Senegal (no city required). Doesn't the whole world know Goodluck Jonathan, the gutless, impotent president of Nigeria by now??? I asked her what city he's in, and why would a learned man accept my word, if she's the beneficiary of her late father's will?

All through this, I'm just having a rip-roaring time, and I'm showing my wife, again, a n00b to teh inturwebz, how to pick out and identify liars, cheats, and scammers and differentiate between them and political advocacy groups who also want your money and will go to almost any length to wrest it from your grasp.

Anyway, this person found me on Google+ so, keeping your sign-up instructions in mind, I opened an account with a mail.com domain and will commence active baiting from that base of operations. Would be quite interested to know some of the more effective and advanced methods of drawing scammers in, if you don't mind.

Welcome RG, which I really hope isn't your pen name?

Great way to start and drive a lad nuts. Best suggestion is read the stickies which have a ton of useful info and cool tools. Then maybe sign up for a mentor who can give you some truly evil suggestions on what to do to these types.

PS-loved your sign off-a character of mine always used it.

Make sure you bait safe,never giving any real info. Read as much as you can and there are mentors to help you.

You might show your Missus to our Sister site Scamwarners. There is usually a link to it at the top of the screen. There are lots more than just common 419 scams to be learned about. One of the up & coming we've seen are Blackmail type scams. Also, some of the Romance scammers are very patient and may take a year or more before they ask for something from you. Lots of people become unwitting Money Mules thinking they are working a legitimate job moving money for an "employer". You name it, there's a scam for it.

Welcome to Eater! I hope you stick around and post more of your bait(s). As mention above, grab a mentor. There is a link in my sig line for new members. There is also a few other links of some of the best (in my opinion) baits on Eater. I am limited by the amount I can post in my sig line, otherwise there would be more. If you have time, sit a spell (with wife) and read a few. It will be better entertainment than a date with your wife to the movies.

Sounds like you found yourself a Senegalese Refugee... Play it right and you can get your first bank accounts off of this one to report and have shut down! Then you can add some of those cute pink piggy's to your signature. Here's a bait I started on dealing with these idiots. It might help you see the scripts they use as most of them are roughly the same. Have fun and welcome!!

Hi, and thanks for your reply. Robert Goddard is not a writer; he's the (late) inventor of liquid rocket propellant, and a childhood idol. I was born a geek.

I've only ever written under my real world name -- the English one.

The sign-off line is said with a Jamaican accent. Sounds more like "rak AHN ya noo," and is a double-edged inside joke. It confuses whomever's looking at it, but it also begs "decoding" if a suspicious mark is educated.

Then there's other subterfuge I like to throw in. I'm a joker, and this is sport to me.

All scams end in tears. Usually of laughter: follow the rules and stay safe: every hour you engage a criminal in hard effort and expense is an hour he isn't spending taking money off some poor pensioner who lacks your critical ability.
