First scambaiting attempt

This is my first vaguely successful attempt at scambaiting (I lost the first few after three or four mails). I've been talking to the 'governor of HSBC in Malaysia' for the last three weeks, with an average of about four mails a day.

I've got three characters involved so far. The main one is a naive but greedy businessman who's helping the governor get an unclaimed $7,000,000 out of Malaysia. He's going through a divorce at the moment and likes to tell the governor about his trials and tribulations with his wife and his two lovely children. The governor needed some cash to set up another Malaysian account to put the money into - the businessman decided to take this out of company funds to hide it from his soon-to-be ex-wife, so the governor needed to submit a false invoice to...

The finance department, run by a Honduran woman with a rather poor grasp of English. She had never heard of moneygram or western union before, and needed it to be explained at length to her a few times before she finally understood. She's made a few trips to the WU office now, but keeps getting the details wrong.

The governor wanted to invest his share of the money into something, so the businessman gave him the contact details of his brother-in-law. Brother-in-law is building a ski resort in Paraguay and, as luck would have it, the Paraguayan government gives out grants to potential investees on completion of a simple five-page form. Unfortunately, the governor's application has been rejected three times now. The first scan was unreadably small, the second was completed in blue ink, and the third was not all in block capitals.

I'm thinking that the next direction will be the ex-wife getting into the businessman's email, finding out the details of the "deal" and demanding that her name be put on the Malaysian account too so that she can claim some of it in the divorce. I think the finance department woman might be fired soon for her incompetence over the WU payments and will be replaced with someone with marginally better English but also no clue how WU payments work.

So, firstly, any thoughts on my new directions? I'm trying to make him have to start his whole scam over as many times as possible. He's been a decent pet so far, but he's started to get very aggravated with the woman in the finance department. I think I should give him "something" (obviously something fake) but I'm not sure what.

Secondly, has anyone dealt with scammers in Malaysia before? I've checked his mails from every address he sends from and they're all coming from Kuala Lumpur. However, he writes like a typical Nigerian - all the typical Nigerian grammar errors and references to God. What's the deal here?

I'm too new myself to offer any substantive assistance...I like the story you're painting so far though!

You may be able to convince him that you won't be able to send anything via WU, but a bank transfer can be completed. Once you have the bank account information from him (after some cajoling...), you can forward the information to a MOD here and they can have it investigated/shut down (from what I understand).

You can try to string him along further after that and see where you can take him! Sounds like you've got him hooked on the side as well. Good luck!

There are some african lads out in malaysia, you have prob just snagged one of those.

Phone baiting those lads thru skype is quite good, as its dead cheap to ring them.

My best advice for "forms" to send is maybe a corrupt file that says payment slip and go quiet for a bit. You can do that using all the wonderful tools here

Obviously, if the soon-to-be-ex-wife finds out about this, she might try to murder her husband and take it ALL for herself. The complications that that would cause......

Welcome and nice job! I assume your baiting safe and all that good stuff? I really like what you've done in the forms dept!

I think the ex-wife should definitely show up and try and cut a deal with your pet.... and there might be a piggy in your immediate future since WU isn't working out!

Cheers guys, and ta for the tip about sending a corrupt file as the WU receipt and the link to the scambaiting toolbox. Those unreadable WU forms will definitely come in handy once dippy D0lores in the finance department finally figures out how to enter the details correctly.

And yeah, I'm baiting nice and safely, all shiny new email addresses that have nothing to do with real life me, and I spent a couple of dollars on a throwaway sim card that I'm hoping to get him to call me on (I'm in Latin America so I reckon that call would end up being pretty expensive for the governor).
