A comment reagrading some African scammers' "justificat

A common "justification" that many of us have seen from the scammers themselves regarding activities by this segment of the world's scamming population is the "racial justice" argument. It boils down to claim that they are scamming white people as payback for past oppression.

So.. to test this theory, I have been replying to a number of Africa-based scammers in the guise of an old man who emigrated to the US from Rhodesia in the late 1950's. As the bait continues, I tell them of my past efforts to succeed in a country where I had to also struggle against white bigotry and still must do so to an extent today--and I congratulate them on being models of success for young people of color, stressing the values of hard work and honest labor.

Anyone want to guess how many scammers decided to fess up and let the poor old black man and fellow oppressed African off the hook vs. those willing to steal his heart medicine money?

Those who have read the stickies know that baiting is absolutely not about race or bigotry. The community here abhors racism, as do I as an individual. I posted the above as a commentary on the basic dishonesty and pure greed as motivation of scammers.

Over the weekend, I received emails asking about scams from would be au pairs from South Africa and the Philippines - the South African had a photo on her gmail and was black (her name would likely have given it away as well if they didn't see photo) and the Philippines are not known as being oppressors of the Africans.

It is just an attempt at getting the sympathy vote from those who are too gullible to realise that they will scam anyone regardless of colour or nationality.

Via ScamWarners, I've talked to scam victims from all over the world, including African countries. Including Nigeria.

I guess the bottom line is that these Crooks will prey on anyone that they think will hand them a free dollar. Not a surprise to me.

A simple search of the email address of the lad involved with the mass bait for new and veteran members shows he regularly places loan scam ads in Nigerian, UAE and Indian outlets. He is an equal opportunity POS.

^^^^^^^^I baited this Lad with my fake Nigerian Lad. Answered his advertisement for a loan on a Nigerian website using a Nigerian name and telling him that I lived in Lagos, was penniless and down on my luck. He was very keen to do "business" with me Twisted Evil

Charles Tive in his work, '419 Scam: Exploits of the Nigerian Con Man' has a chapter dedicated to local 419; scams perpetrated by these con artists on their own people. He even suggests that when someone enters this game they run the local scams on fellow Nigerians first before being elevated to the international ones.

The payback for slavery excuse is merely that, an excuse for them to carry on making a living off the suffering and misery of their victims. They have no idea who they send their mails to they will scam anyone that replies to them regardless of their ethenticity.

Didn't Nigerians run the slavery business in "Slave Coast"? Europeans and Colonials just bought the slaves from there among others?

EVEN IF they only scam white people... how is this "justification" possibly valid? The vast majority of people living in Western nations today - regardless of their skin color - were in no way involved in whatever persecution or oppression took place in the distant past. Rolling Eyes

I had a lad that I'd been winding up for several months suddenly turn around and say that I had to be a black man! Because no white man would treat him they way I had!!!

ETA: And add something useful too while you're at it, FFS Duckling! I had a gold lad in my previous life who agreed to meet me in neighboring country's airport (Togo I think, but not sure). Now we all know how that meeting would have probably ended for yours truly. So I had a little twist and said I wouldn't be coming personally: I would be sending a representative. A black representative with very specific history at that. I made up a whole story of how he is very aware of his family's background as slaves and how his ancestors came from the West African region and how it would be very nice for him to travel there for the first time ever.

I made the lad promise to show him around, discuss history with him and all that wash, and promised to compensate him richly for his trouble. This character was born in a minute, but once the lad bit, it became one of my most fleshed out (if back then somewhat caricature) characters. And at no point did the lad have any problem with it. Of course his scam would have failed completely if he had told me "nonono I don't want to meet anyone not white skinned here in Africa", but seriously: just what are the odds that he would have treated my "representative" any better than anyone else? He was out there to get rich, and I had promised him some $10 000. Skin color has exactly nothing to do with that.

I greatly enjoyed his rage when he made that safari for nothing.
