I got a call from the lad I've been baiting for a few months; the payment J. sent to him was chopped by Gomer. The lad forwarded J. the email from Gomer. He told me to create a Yahoo account and stop using the one that was hacked by Gomer. (What actually happened is that some guy at the bank misread the account number and sent the money to the wrong account, which happens to be Gomer's. Gomer's hacking was limited to finding out the lad's email address. The lad still hasn't noticed that the money was sent to the wrong account.)
*Gomer's account is at Yahoo.
*When I've heard of someone being a victim of the "I'm straneded without money in <foreign country>" scam, usually the email address that is cracked is at Yahoo.
Why does the lad think that Yahoo would be more secure than what J. is currently using? (After I told him, he said that Gmail would also be acceptable.) |

I wouldn't search for any technical knowledge in his request. Yahoo is or at least was the Lads preferred mail provider of choice, although recently they have become very proactive at shutting lad accounts down forcing them to look for alternatives.
He just wants you to open a new account and Yahoo is the first Email provider that came into his head. Hence the nickname Yahoo Bois. |

Way way back in the archives, about 2007/2008, I had a post about why lads in africa use Yahoo, and also, all the businesses, banks etc
Microsoft/Windows neglected to sell to the African Nations, well, they sold the OS, but not the ancillary packages, like email etc
Yahoo took all of the market in Africa, people who have been involved with scammers for longer than I have will hopefully agree with me, that the lads use Yahoo because it is the only email/OS they are used to
Banks, businesses, all industries in most african nations use yahoo, unfortunately for the legitimate businesses, it has become a red flag for any one dealing with them |

Yeah I think in Africa Yahoo has become another name for Email. Just as in the US Xerox means photocopy. The dominant company in that industry becomes the name of the process. Hoover = vacuum cleaners, Vaseline = petroleum jelly (etc). |

Once upon a time I worked in the oil and gas industry - and EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. of our LEGITIMATE customers from the African region... used Yahoo. I never knew/understood/cared why. It was just a routine fact that we accepted - and took precautions to make sure we knew who we were really dealing with. *sigh* |
