Fun with Craigslist Scammers. Here is the scammers direct phone number too 714-485-8094

Was looking for a cool place to rent and quickly found out it was a fake. I was pissed because I thought it was a cool deal so I decided that if you were going to waste my time that I was going to waste theirs. Hilarity ensues. Excerpts from emails throughout the day culminating in an actual phone call.

• "But I have to be honest. I am a sex offender. So if your’e ok with that so am I." Shocker- they were ok with that. Lets push the envelope further.

• But I spent 15 years in prison for this. I also used to be a heroin addict. I am a heavy smoker who lives in my truck and prefers all transactions in cash with no papertrails. Still ok with this.

• When filling out the application to rent I included the following: Heavy drinker, works as a third grade teacher, pot smoker and occasional cocaine user and has a pet crocodile and pot belly pigs living indoors. Wow. Still interested.

• {side note- the whole time they refused to meet in person and wanted the money via western union through a grocery store. And they pretended to be a white Christian couple who works in Africa. Context is important here.}

• And then they called. Yes I gave my phone number because initially I thought it was real. This person barely spoke English and was clearly a Somali pirate of some kind. I started laughing because he kept asking me for the money and hoped I would take care of his precious house (in Somali pirate accent). I proceeded to laugh and I told him that I was confused, because he didn’t sound like a white Englishman . He got mad and said he was ( pirate accent) so I asked to talk to his wife. (again, Somali pirate but with worse English). I called him a liar and asked how we could live with himself. He informed me that we wasn’t a liar because he was a Christian and defended the fact that he was a white senior englishman. I am laughing hysterically. Ok I said, you’re a Christian lying piece of crap and congratulated him because he was now infact, victim of a scam. I wasted your entire day you piece of trash and told him to have a nice day.

I hate to sound preachy, but do not take these guys lightly. Baiting if fun and amusing. The scammers are anything but. Yes, they may appear completely clueless and simple, but they are not. And you really don't even need to be smart and clever to be a potentially dangerous and violent criminal.

The scammer in this case has your real phone number. Drop all contact with him (it seems you already did), and do not bait with your real details. Your "Somali pirate" may live near you, or have someone living near you. That's a risk no baiter wants to take.

I suggest reading the forums for a few days, getting info on safe baiting, applying for a mentor and having another, this time more organized and safe go at it.

Another thing is that never reveal that you are baiting him or otherwise educate him.

In this case it may be somewhat OK as this one was accidental and you had to break contact with him anyway.

How dumb are these guys? I have one on the hook regarding a tool I listed on craigslist. When they hit you with the usual dumb questions, "Do you have pics you can send?", when I post 5 on the site ad. So i told him all I had left was a left-handed monkey wrench for $450.00. You guessed it, he wanted it. I cashed his fake check (supposedly) and jetted to Vegas because I have a gambling addiction. So, he sends me this:

"Attention, You are under federal investigation by the FTC. All
communication materials including email conversations that have been
documented during this failed transaction will be used to assist in
our federal investigation. Under federal law you will be prosecuted to
the fullest extent of the law. You are expected to establish a line of
communication with the other vendor to settle the matter. If not other
actions will be taken."

From the same e-mail address no less. So, how stupid are these guys? Dumber than rocks!

Some are dumb. Some are more clever. Most appear dimwitted to us because of cultural differences and language barriers. And none of them gives a damn what kind of information you're giving out because they're not really buying that left-handed monkey wrench or shipping that trunk of money to your front door. They're just trying to get money out of you. Being the greedy bastards they are, if you give them some hope that they're going to make a buck or two out of it, they're going to keep trying to scam you, even if you think there's no way in hell anyone should be believing the garbage you're sending a scammer. It's a totally different culture, so they just can't understand why people would mess with them just for fun with no chance of getting money out of the deal.

There is also that certain x-factor (in lack of better word) in scamming that at the same time makes scammer vulnerable. He must believe that the scam can work and propably does as he knows that money can be had with it.

What they do in the USA ducky is recruit people via work-at-home scams to print and mail phoney checks and then WU the money back to them. Some of these dupes are aware and some are not but they take all the risk of getting busted. I have had a lad try and recruit me after he realized he'd been had> An extra $500-$1,000 a week would come in handy. As more people become computer savy this scam will be on the wane. Now they are Skyping via text message instead of e-mail because they think it makes them more realistic. I'm tired of baiting that way because it's damn tedious. In the past I tried to conceal all my info but at least in the USA I'm not concerned about anyone coming after me over a bait. It's not profitable to do that. If you get the guy to run all over Europe on a long involved bait and get him really pissed at you it might want to be more careful. I have a 9mm Beretta that's always with me. Come get me lad! Wink
