I advertised a few items on gumtree and just last night I received a reply asking about the condition and not specifying what item she/he was interested in.

Suspecting something dodgy I listed all items and surprisingly she went for the most expensive one.

Any suggestions as to how I could screw with her? (I'm sure it may be a he, but for the sake of ease lets call him a her). Clearly he hasn't got any balls anyway.

I would say DROP him as I suspect that he/she has real life details, never a good idea to bait some-one like that.

As mentioned, if this person has any of your RL details, drop them. Of course if you could find a way to make contact with "her" under a fake profile it would be good, you could bait her according to the straight-bait guidelines in the "university" section.

Of course, you'd have to find a way to hook them without risking tricking innocent online shoppers in the process.

Welcome to Eater! Answer him from the email address of a made-up character with no connection to your real self, as if he had answered an ad for an E-flat fangschleister.

Not too late. Since you will answer from an email address that has no connection to the one you answered from, and the item is completely different, and he answers thousands at once, he won't know it's you, or notice that he didn't actually answer such an ad.

Also make sure that the physical address of your character does not exist. It should not be near (say within 100 km) your real address. Of course a nonexistent address doesn't have a precise distance from an existent one Smile

Didn't even consider contacting him in such manner. I suppose I could always email back saying, oh the item you were interested in has been sold but I have got this for sale. And that'd be enough to fall for.

Anyhoo - just now I received another text message from an odd (UK) number ... +12407.... Normally would presume that's a home number but it isn't.

He is interested in the guitar too. Since he does know my details I will waste a bit of his time.

What if I pose as an independant small retailer/guitar maker (therefore no online presence).

Reply saying that the item is no longer for sale but I've got a few old/antiques that I may consider selling + that I make a few one-offs and it being a new brand I'm looking to emburse new artists.

If he baits, say how long it takes to make and what a costly process it is. Therefore I would require some proof, for example a few music examples (of my chosen preferably) and maybe a few photos of their band practise/local gig.

Possible?
