I'm a big fan of Linux, mostly because it's free Smile

but it has the added benefit of being immune to the Windows and MSIE exploits...allowing you to browse "unsavoy" websites with relative safety from viruses and maleware...a .exe or .msi simply will not run in Linux.

One of the downsides of Linux however is less software to play with, limited access to some peer-to-peer apps like YIM...but I found this little program through Ubuntu Software Center...also free...for text to speach and with a little tweaking it has many potential fun applications for baiting, so I put together a short demo for you all.

I've used the Linux limited YIM access to my advantage in past baits...ENDLESS delays while you make your pet download other programs for compatibility...ALWAYS a software incompatibility issue Smile

"I got this computer at yard sale and it doesn't have Windows...I don't know how to use it and nothing I download works, can you help and put XXX on your puter for me?"

Obviously, I know the work arounds for YIM and other issues, but that's not really the point is it? Smile

Just saying, Linux has some definite advantages in bating.

I use an Ubuntu compatible Puppy Linux, and that could come in handy for calls as an uncooperative WU or MG agent. Smile

Ya gotta love the live CD. I've never tried Puppy, but if you can get to Ubuntu software center it should be there (I'm running 12.04)

I just thought this such a nice little program, easy to use with TONS of voices, maybe not the greatest in the world, but so quickly and easily useful...maybe I can find a lad speak patch for it Smile

Nice record button at the top for creating .wavs or just run the speaker for phone calls...

Though I haven't tried you could probably use QJACK or something to run it direct to voip client.

Yeah you got to love GNU/linux. I keep puppy GNU/Linux on a usb drive in-case something happens to my computer. I also use it for re-partitioning my hard-drive. Right now I am running Gentoo as my main choice of operating system. It has a reputation for being hard to install but once you get it running it works very well.

It's a tough change for sure, I was an MS slave since 3.1. Vista/7 nonsense was the last straw, something HAD to change. But the new linux versions are getting so much easier to use...boots to a real desktop that does stuff I understood right away. Unlike say old Red Hat and that stupid blinking cursor...uh now what do I do?

Webcam studio is another nice tool...allows for re-routing of clips, playing prerecorded instead of live feed. I've used it with ustream, no clue how to connect it inline with something like YIM or gmail video chat. I'm sure something could be strung together.

I've got a love bait going now, as my character is...uh...VASTLY different than me in real life, I've been looking into some of the tools in linux to fake the personality in a more convincing way Smile

One "live" phone call could easily turns weeks in to months of dedication from my pet.

I run Solaris on my main workstations, and there really are absolutely no viruses for Solaris. Although rare for Linux, they do exist. When I used to run a web server which allowed people to upload files, it was not unusual for someone to upload a root kit for Linux, which would be totally useless on a SPARC processor, and even on x86 based Solaris systems there is zero hope of running a Linux executable.

That said, I think your idea about telling scammers you are running Linux is good. I'm in the process of asking my mugu how can I zoom into the letters, and although he has not replied yet, if he comes up with something I will sure make out I'm running Linux, even though this laptop is running Windows XP.

Oh I know, a few rare viruses out there for Linux, but all the rampant Win exploit garbage just dies and that alone is worth is the effort. I mean sure, you COULD try to run a trojan in WINE...that would be entertaining.

I want to look into Solaris/SPRAC, sounds like fun Smile

I've heard of it over the years, but never knew anyone who actually ran solaris.

I wonder how adding linux to the bag of tricks would work? Would they even know what it is? In my case, when I first made the jump, it was the literal truth...I could play solitaire and get firefox to run that was about it. Any computer issue you can have that causes THEM problems is good one though. It's a safe bet they won't be pulling the user-agent data to double check your story Smile

I'm thinking when you explain linux to the lads it goes something like "yes, it's different from windows, it's very, very expensive, custom made just for this computer because it makes it look very pretty." (because you are a fat, rich mark just throwing your money away on anything)

For God's sake don't convert the lads into Linux nerds. We need them less tech savvy. Laughing

As for Linux and the safety issues I heard it once best described as this: Yes, I am going to make an open source bit of malware and infect users who generally know something about computers... in fact enough to reverse engineer my code and fight back. Sounds like a great idea!

I dunno on that one...it's a toss up...converting them into linux nerds WOULD make them less able to communicate with the real world. Have you ever heard linux nerds make ONE bit of sense in conversation? Hang on....lemme check the manpage on that....

But perhaps there is value in inventing a whole new OS? CINUX? Same rules would apply, NOTHING that runs on their computer will run on yours...it's gonna take a week or two to find a compatible middle ground, after they download a few hundred gig of miley cyrus vids renamed .exe.

I'm not saying it's a big or important thing to add in, it's got limited application as delay tactic, but it's also one of those real life things that's just too stupid not to be true.

The case that helped me was a love bait that wanted web cam chat, I was very new to linux, couldn't get YIM working then even if I wanted to. This went on for a week, trying different programs to get this web cam and completely side tracked the main conversation. Ultimately, the cam request was dropped while he tried to get back on script, after all I had tried so very earnestly to comply...

It is all good fun until one of your lads gets a hold of something like Backtrack or Blackbuntu with a fair piece of knowledge, all I'm saying. That is far from the type of (TCP) communication you want to have with your lads. I prefer them tech illiterate. Laughing

Sun Microsystems used to produce workstations and servers which had SPARC processors. These are totally imcompatible with Intel CPUs. These workstation and servers run Solaris, which was Suns operating system.
Solaris was closed-source, although much of it was made open-source at a later date.

For workstation applications, the SPARC chips are not too useful now, as Intel chips are faster and cheaper, so there are no SPARC workstations sold new today. But for serious server applications, SPARC chips work very well. Oracle, the company best known for its database bought Sun for $7 billion about 5 years ago, so now Sun no longer exist, but Oracle do.

You can download Solaris for free, to run on either SPARC or x86 CPUs

If you really want to avoid viruses, that is the way to go. I run Solaris on a Sun Blade 2000 SPARC workstation, a Sun Ultra 27 Xeon based workstation and I think I have it on a laptop too.

Pretty much everything we do educates them in one way or another...even if only in practice reading english to try to figure out what we're rambling about. If there's a few smart enough to learn something like blackbuntu it's not really going to matter what we try to un-teach them...any that tech savy have moved up the food chain to hacking and ID theft already.

And I had a well duh moment...my new OS HAS to be called WINUX. If it ever DID get included in a script it be would an insult to any computer nerd not on mac.

wasname...thanks for the solaris link! I'm running a dual quad core Xeon...a machine I built for rendering video fx (cinelerra and blender), I'm betting it can handle solaris as a VM. if you ever run across an old SPARC or AS/400 lemme know, LOVE old boxes!

You can pick up Sun workstations pretty cheaply on eBay. I would suggest a Sun Blade 2000 or 2500 workstations as those were the best SPARC workstations made, and their prices are now quite modest. The Sun Blade 1000 is very similar to the 2000. I think electrically they are identical, though the Blade 2000 looks a bit nicer than the 1000.

You can also get Sun servers, but beware these often have no way to connect a monitor to them and also the noise level might be too high for use in a domestic environment.

I play with several *nix distros, and the BSD variants too..

PC-BSD is a true Unix, (Like Solaris) has a great update solution, and is rock solid..
