There was a bit on the radio today about a nasty phising/identity theft scam. It goes as follows:
They call you up and say your Sky TV account is due a refund. Nice. They ask for your bank account and other details, then send you a card reader of the type used by banks for internet banking. Then they phone you up and ask you to put your PIN in and read off the number the bank card reader comes up with to process your payment. Job done.
What they actually do is get your A/C and bank info, set up internet banking to your account, then - pretending to be you - request that your bank sends you a card reader. You feed it your PIN and give the the return number to them, and they can they can access your account. A guy in the Scottish Highlands got cleaned out to the tune of ~2K and more are expected.
Do take time to warn your friends and relatives, as a new fiddle this could take in a fair few new victims.

I'm sure it would work elsewhere but the initial strikes seem to have been in Scotland. Anywhere is a possible target. |

Seriously, It has to start somewhere so it will be only a matter of time before the rest of the UK gets hit with this so I hope it makes the national media soon. I will mention this to my Sky subscribing mates. |

Its a nasty scam as they seem to have targeted the elderly, though I had heard one woman was suspicious and went to the police.
Having Sky isn't something you can disguise as the dish is pretty obvious.
So far I've only heard of it in the Borders area but it may spread |
