It took two years to complete the the investigation to catch these scammers.

Browsing the wasteland of the internet while using a computer configured to provide administration privileges is a bad idea.

Set up a limited privilege User account that has NO privileges to install software, run executable software, of change system settings.

I log into my Administrator account to set up the computer, add video codecs, etc.

I log into my user account to browse the web and read email.

This has saved my butt a few times. A thumbnail photo often comes to an Exe file. I don't run it. I get the options of Save or Abort. Run is not an option. Online videos that say I need to install a codec also fail. If I need to update flash to view a video, I log out of my user account and log into the admin account and go Directly to Adobe to get the latest flashplayer. I log back into the User account to try to play the video. If it does not play with the latest and greatest video codec installed, you don't want to view the fake video anyway.

Practice safe computing. It is easier to avoid installing the nasty stuff than it is to try to clean the crap out of your machine. Most nasties don't want you to be able to easily remove it.
