Hi, newbie here...

Let's say I'm talking to this women on a dating site. Initially, I suspected her of being a scammer. But after extended conversation, it turns out she's not. Do I have an obligation to tell her the truth (that I was seeking scammers) or should I simply stop writing cold turkey?

Welcome to Eater, FurryFriend!
I would tell the lady that you've enjoyed communicating with her, but you've met someone who seems a better match, lives locally, or some such excuse.

Welcome FurryFriend

When trawling dating sites for lads you will come across innocent men and women. You don't say where you found her, but some sites are full of scammers, you were just unlucky.

I agree with Dya Reyarunen-Downmeleg gentle let down but NEVER admit you are a baiter.

Posing as a woman I also come across west African males who are really looking for a visa.

Devil woman's right. I also occasionally get real people on my fake 4ppl site as well. I just drop them, that way there's no need to tell them about baiting, and it's something that happens to real daters all the time.

Most people who use online dating or various forms of chat don't really understand there is some risk involved.

If they get too attached to a baiter who was slow to catch on they were real, then vanishes, MAYBE we can think of it as a learning experience? Maybe they'll be more cautious in the future?

I constantly try to remind people who use online dating not to get too emotionally involved with somebody you only chat with online. Even when it involves two real people, it isn't always real.
The guy may never show up, may be married, may just be passing time on the PC during slow periods at work, or the ankle bracelet he is wearing won't let him travel to Vladistanasia to meet you.

Running into fake people online is part of life.
