About 2 weeks ago i was hanging out at my friends house, and their neighbor stopped by to talk. Their neighbor is a 50 year old guy. He starts talking about how he met a 25 year old girl from Nigeria online. The girl apparently owns a home decorating business and works as a nurse in Nigeria. She told him she is over there for work, and lives in the U.S. He shows everybody several pictures of an attractive girl. He has had several IM conversations and talked on the phone to her. He had an email with him verifying the flight plans for her to come and visit. (I didn't get a look at the flight email) The plan was that since her house was close that he would pick her up at the airport. By this point it already looks like a scam to me, I told my friend this but she didn't listen to me. The girl flying in was supposed to happen 2 Wednesdays ago. Tonight i asked my friend if the girl ever showed up. Apparently there was some kind of issue that required the girl from Nigeria to send $250,000 with Western Union to my friends neighbor, and then he has to send it back. I once again told my friend this sounds like a scam. She still does not believe me.
Does this sound like a scam to you? Has anyone ever heard of a scam like this? |

Yes it sounds like a scam.
The "payment" is normally sent by fake check though, and the refund that the victim pays back is through Western Union.
$250,000 is a larger amount than usual though (although certainly not unheard of). Normally, they just hit for flight fees. Sometimes, they'll have an "accident" on the way to the airport and also try to scam for medical fees as well.
Basic rule is - if you're dealing with anyone on the internet and don't know them personally, don't send them cash.
If your friend still doesn't believe you, direct them over to our sister site - www.scamwarners.com. |

absolutely a scam
variation on the advance fee method
check is fake but can be deposited okay
you send the money difference back
check is returned later as nfg
you are out the money you sent |
