As some of you may know, I am a librarian working in a public library. Yesterday I had a patron who needed help in doing a background check of a man she had met on Yahoo Personals. On her own she was able to find that he had two marriages/divorces. He had lied to her saying that he had been married only once.
Through www.publicdata.com I was able to find his criminal records - 12 pages of them. Then on a hunch I asked if she wanted me to check the registered sex offenders list for the state. Bingo! There he popped up with all his information plus several of his jail photos.
I gave the lady all the printouts and told her that she had a decision to make. She said that the decision was already made. She was suppose to get together with him later that night for supper but she was going to cancel. Sadly she has a daughter of 16 and he offenses were on two girls 13 & 14.
Out of curiosity I contacted Yahoo to see what their policy is about registered sex offenders advertising in their personals section. I received a reply back saying that they needed his Yahoo ID and Personal Ad ID which I did not have. So I sent the Yahoo person links to everything I found and am waiting for a reply.
My question is have any of you ever ran into a registered sex offender when dealing with the romance scams? If so what have you done about it? |

Nice job.
Unfortunately while Australia does have a sexual offenders register, it's not available to the public. Can't have them handicapped, and ridiculed can we. It might affect there civil rights bullshit.
There was a case the other day where some grub, came out of prison, and moved back next door to his last victim. fortunately the media picked up on it, and it very soon became public news. And he was moved.
But once there off the radar, it's a case of "out of sight out of mind" The general public has no way of tracking these people the way you did. |

Chi,
Where I live (US) the registered sex offender list is public record, available on any computer search.
If the guy has registered, he is "legal", meaning he has complied with the law that he must alert LE as to where he lives.
There are usually stringent guidelines about ANY contact with minors.
If he violates a court order, the police will want to know.
When these people try to find new victims, they will often meet the parent and form a relationship with them to get to the juvenile. Once the parent sees the new boyfriend as "trustworthy" they will let their guard down and very bad things can happen.
In your position, if possible, I might try to encourage the woman to contact her local police dept and ask to speak with their detective that works with juvenile sexual assaults. If she does go there, they will let her know how dangerous this guy is.
But also be careful, as if the woman you are trying to help tells the Bad guy that you told her about him, he may come looking for you. You also have your career to worry about if this guy makes a complaint against you. It sucks, but is reality that these scum can lodge complaints like any normal citizen.
Not knowing all the details, I'm sorry I can't give you more help.
If you'd like, PM me with more and I'll try to help you.
I guess the bottom line is be careful and use good judgment. |

Bravo Chibuike!! Thank you for letting us know that Yahoo does take their membership somewhat seriously. I hope they do track him down and notify authorities.
I have not had any experience with Yahoo Personals but I do know that here they are court ordered not to use the internet if they were found to be an internet predator. In the public data sex offender files it even labels them Internet Predator and gives the age ranges of the offender's preferences.
Unfortunately, I know of one sex offender, who doesn't report often when he moves (he's practically itinerant) and he's not off the net, either. I've reported where I've found him, when I've found him, but the authorities never report back to me. He does go back to jail sometimes, for parole violations though, so something's working.
As for lads and baiting, I've never run across anything like pedophilia but they can get pretty raunchy and sexually explicit. They like porn. It's why I like to use religion in my baits. They're less likely to get offensive with me if I play a chaste and virtuous woman insulted by their dirty chat. |

If the laws on sexual offenders were in my hands there would be no need for a national database..... |
