...... according to the BBC.
As reported on this mornings TV news and radio (all of about 60 seconds)
and on their website (if you search for it)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7726146.stm
We know this is not exactly new, and I am very disappointed that Auntie did not give it more prominence.
I'm thinking of writing to them suggesting the highlight this problem. |

| This will change in November 2009 with the introduction of new legislation, making the Financial Services Authority responsible for overseeing the industry. |

| Examples might include additional security checks - such as asking questions only the real customer would know the answer to, or the increased use of CCTV cameras in money transfer company branches. |
These are all well and good for transfers that are actually picked up in the UK, but we all know that the transfers can be picked up anywhere in the world, and British (or American, or any other country's) legislation is not going to affect branches in the countries where the services are most badly abused. |

Agreed.
I guess what she should have done, was to send it to herself, collect it and then send the receipt to the lad. I wonder what he would have done then?
I suppose its new for the UK as I haven't heard of anyone pulling this trick before in the UK. It's common enough as we know, ripping people off via the Auction or Sales sites, but the scammers/collections are usually outside of the country the adverts are in.
And Western Union have had decades in which to fix the gaps in their security but have so far done nothing except to print a warning to customers. |
