As the weight of the world on my shoulders I once again have the urge to escape the rat race.
My current plan is to take the Trans-Siberian Rail from Moscow to Vladivostok.
From there I am planning to go to Japan, but so far I haven't found any "cheap enough" options for this leg of the trip.
A ferry across would cost about $320-360 USD, which is a bit too much for my taste (as the 9288km train ticket from Moscow to Vlad will cost about the same).
So, any Japanese or Russian members (preferrably from the Primorsky region), THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO HELP ME OUT!

As far as I know, even the ferry hasn't been running too long. The Russians and the Japanese have an ongoing, serious territorial dispute about the Kuril Islands and tend pretty much to ignore each other up there.
I think your options are rather limited. |

Disputes about the Kuril Islands, Sakalin amongst other things. To be perfectly honest I think that pay that sort of a price might be your only option.
Admittedly, my knowledge of the area is getting a bit old, and doesn't include Vladi (just Amurska and the Khabarovsk), but I doubt that Russians have discovered the budget travelling ethic for foreigners. |

My Dad made that trip once from Tambov on the TSR. He mentioned that he would never do it again. Check their sailing dates very carefully. I've not researched this route, but its not uncommon for ferries in Japan to make a circular route, not just from one place to another and back. |
