One good reason for operating as a cheque-lad is the weight of the product.

Just think of the tonnage this guy had to cope with.

Used to be when a dodgy �1 coin could be spotted a mile off, and you could bite it and leave marks, recent ones are much more hard, but a bit of scraping reveals a silver coloured base coin, the quality of casting isn't that good on the reverse side, the band round the edge is off-centred.

I wonder if this guy goes to Court and receives a hefty fine, would he ask for time to pay it off (must take a while to pour out a new batch)

There were statistics released a couple of years ago that showed that every single cash register in London had at least one of these dodgy Pound coins in them.
I must have come across literally thousands of them in my time in business in London.
It got to a point where I would take them as everyone was using them as legal tender and my customers didn't even care if they received them in their change. You could even bank them!!!
