Does anyone know where I can buy a digital cable box for my tv? I'm tired of paying my cable company the equivalent of $75 a year to rent it. The other reason I want it is because I have an HP HDTV that takes about 3-5 seconds to change channels when using the built in tuner, but using the rented box it's almost instant. I have Cox cable if that makes a difference.

becareful what you get they can "Zap" some of the "fixed" boxes to kill em

Is it even legal to 'zap' it? I have no intention of trying to descramble anything, I just want a box to use as a better tuner for my television.

Depending on exactly what you want the TiVO 3 can accept the cable card and act as a tuner and is of course an HD DVR as well. I have just started researching all of this as I am getting my first HDTV in time for the Super Bowl (man I do love my wife Very Happy

).

The problem is the cable company won't sell you the box as they want to rent it to you. They assume any used box bought on the net is for illegal purposes only.

I think Cox and TiVO have worked out a deal. I know Comcast is rolling out TiVO software on all of their DVR's. Like you I don't want to rent, but a TiVO 3 is like $600.00.... so it would take a lot of years of renting to hit that price.

well to rent a HDTV-DVR from cox here is about $22 a month thats $264 and a New Tivo DVR is only $300 from them with the $10 a month fee. SO works out and you own the equipment
