Tech help..Transferring WMA files to MP3?

As youve guessed, my PC knowledge pretty much ends at photoshopping WU receipts, but Ive got myself a faboo-tastic phone with an MP3 Player on it, and want to transfer some of my bands tracks onto it (Sad I know, but it impresses the ladies)

So, I gave it a crack, and ended up sending my phone a WMA file that it cant open, so does anyone know how to convert WMA files to MP3? Im using XP and sending via Media Player.

Can't you just right click on the music file and change it's name from .wma to .mp3?

That won't work for the same reason that renaming a .dll to .jpg doesnt Razz

You'll need to use a conversion program. The one I always used on Windows was Quintessential Player, available from http://www.quinnware.com/

Once you load the .wma files into the playlist, you can right click them and say "Convert To -> MP3"

oh i need to know how to convert compact digital audio files to mp3

anyone any clues to do this.

ive just tried the above freeware and it doesnt convert this type of file

Windows Media Player will rip them to MP3. Failing that, http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/

Real Player will also convert CD tracks into mp3 files. http://www.real.com/
It is easy to create mp3 files from CDs in Media Player and Real Player, but starting with a wma file can be a problem. There are a number of wma to mp3 shareware programs available and some have trial or limited use versions. Just Google "convert wma mp3" for pages of them. This is a free one, but I have never used it. http://koyotstar.free.fr/indexEn.html

SP's idea is actually pretty neat. We're selling a software to (among other things) organize and play WMA files. Customers who want to work with mp3 we tell to simply rename their file extensions from .wma to .mp3. Works just fine.

Can I convert them to Ogg Vorbis with the same method, just renaming .wma to .ogg? I HOPE SO!

dont understand as ive downloaded some of the above and they just wont work.

tried burning from media player and that aint happening.i think i need to
get the originals and start again.

just to clarify that the files are compact digital audio and are on my hard drive. if they were on disc i could convert,but i cant burn the buggers for some reason unknown to me.

i tired of trying today so will make another start on them tomorrow.

You wouldn't want to do that. As far as I'm concerned, the whole point of OGGs is the superiour sound quality (and the fact it's open source). If you convert from WMA or MP3 to OGG, you're just going to end up with a low quality OGG. Better to rip the OGG straight from CD/convert from WAV.

All of my CDs are converted to OGGs when I put them onto the PC, as I fully support the open-source-ness and the better-qualty:less-space ratio of the Ogg format.
It was humour. Sorry. Should have been more explicit. I WILL LEARN TO USE SMILIES, EVEN IF IT KILLS ME.
(Note: also humour. I don't intend to suffer death from music files or emoticons, just in case anyone's concerned about me.)
