Als ik Nederlands spreek tegen een Zuid-Afrikaanse Scammer, kan hij me verstaan?
=
If I speak Dutch to a South-African Scammer, can he understand me? That would be pretty interesting... I can pretend to be a scammer as well and even speak to him in his own language if I slobber over my keyboard and my Dutch skills. That would really build trust, IMO.

@Rage Hunt.

Ek dink hy sal jy effens vertstaan, maar nie perfek nie. Nederlands en Afrikaans is veel verskil.

(translated)

I think he'll understand a bit, but not perfectly. Dutch and Afrikaans are very different.

To translate your question into Afrikaans:

As ek Nederlands spreek teen 'n Suid Afrikaans se scammer, kan hy my verstaan?

As you can see, it's very similar to write, but Afrikaans is far less fluid than dutch, with clearing-your-throat "G"s and rolling-your-tongue "R"s. sounds more like angry Flemish Smile

Most afrikaans speakers can pick up about 40-50% of spoken Dutch, and maybe 60-70% written, but the accents and grammar are really quite different, and the slang (of which there is a lot) doesn't translate at all.

It's also worth noting that Afrikaans is probably *not* going to be your Lad's 1st language. Odds are he speaks Zulu or Xhosa as a 1st, with Afrikaans and English as tertiary languages. Afrikaans is seen as the language of the opressors (The official language of apartheid and all) so it's not hugely popular in the scamming demographic. Also, keep in mind that not all Lads *in* South Africa *are* South African, there is a huge Nigerian illegal immigrant population in Johannesburg, which is probably how the scam got to SA in the 1st place.

Although the languages are different, I understood that perfectly.

Maar ek weet nie of jy vir hom gaan verstaan nie. Wink
