The following email turned up in my catcher account. On face value it appears to be an innocent ASEM. Is it an ASEM or the first move in a scam???????

It really wouldn't surprise me if it's the opener for a scam. What really tips me off is the reference to 'your country' rather than a specific country name - as well, the strange usage 'of coming for vacation'. As far as I am aware, 'Joel' is a purely English first name (as opposed to, for example, 'Alex'). One would not expect syntax like that from a native English speaker.
The only usable IP in the header is 212.162.21.240. That resolves to Dusseldorf. Why don't you respond? If it's a scam, his response should make it clear, and you can react appropriately.
However, I have not seen this before. Perhaps one of our members more experienced in different scam modalities would care to comment? |

It must be a scam. Notice how they wrote "in your country", and not the name of a country, town or hotel?
My guess is there will be problems with the VISA card and this will lead to a check mule scam. |

If not a cheque scam, it'll probably involve an overpayment with the credit card and a request to send on the difference by Western Union.
Scamorama has a couple of baits of the latter type: http://www.scamorama.com/noogie_favour.html is an example. |

I get it now.
It's actually directed at accommodation providers. They accept the booking the scammer pays by fake/stolen credit card and then either cancels and claims a refund or overpays and also claims a refund. My mistake was thinking that it was directed at all and sundry when in fact it's quite specific. |

He wants to book a room, maybe buy a computer to use on his trip, pay for it all with a credit card, then cancel and have you send the money and the computer to him. Then the credit card company will realize it is fraud and charge everything back, old scam. |
