Well yesterday at my run to check the mail at my dropbox, (The Sotre Manager is Aware of my scambaiting) and she made note to tell me that another person that has a box there had received a call form UPS saying they had a pakage with a check - and they were not expecting it - the store manager did call the # the scammer left on the package - but it went to voice mail only.
But the kicker is she was able to tell the owner of the other box about the typical hoax from what i had told her.! - A nice way to end the day! |

Forgive my ignorance, but since the main reason I really keep up with this forum is to learn about how scams work in case I ever have to help someone else. What is the basis of this form of scam?

This has been described before :
You get check (cheque), cash check (cheque), send balance to other person.
Bank calls, the check (cheque) you were sent bounced
You lose.
e.g you are sent $500
you keep $50, mail send off $450 to sender
Bank calls, you owe them $500
Police call, you paid in stolen/counterfeit cheque (check)
You lose. |

It's better than that, hugh.  The unusual circumstances are going to mean that the owner of the other drop box will tell friends and family about his/her near miss, and the next time scams come up in conversation, there's a good chance the friends and family will tell other people, and so on. All those ripples from Lester's friendly chats with his drop box company. Good work, Lester.  |
