Well, it's better to ask the experts than me. In fact, after I got back from an enforced break from baiting due to work commitments, I dropped my character at the time, a snooty businessman from New England. He would always get angry and start telling off lads, and he would bring up the 'homosexualism' thing a bit too early. I got some fine abuse for my sig file, but I tended to burn through the lads pretty quickly!

Although (generally speaking) sub-Saharan Africa is still an extremely homophobic society and hate crimes against LGBT Africans are distressingly common, it's probably better not not bang this particular drum too early or too often. Keeping a lad hooked is a question of practical psychology, and you seem to be doing fine as it is. What your lad wants is of course money, and by having the prospect of Anita arriving is a carrot which may take him interesting places.

The key to a really good trophy, I'm told, is patience. As you say, it's a question of getting your lad invested. Look at how some of the masters achieve it - somehow a lad gets so hooked that he can be repeatedly safaried all over Africa, or in some cases even further. But when such threads are put up for us to enjoy, they usually leave out most of the preliminary material by which a lad's trust was built up to that point...

Well, burning through them, as you call it, also increases the chance you will happen upon lad gold! Unfortunately, my work makes it hard for me to focus on more than one, or two. One of my first posts was to ask if I could do this effectively, and work. It turns out I can. Very Happy

Open questions. What am I doing wrong here? Is he not invested enough yet? Is he just too wary? Should I drop the picture bit, and just chop him again, and again? Or possibly try for a safari, through a very dependable shipping company. If I can't get a picture from this lad, would a safari be any easier? I'd love to hear some thoughts.

The most important thing to remember about baiting, especially if you're going for trophies, is this: there are some lads who no matter how many skilled baiters are going at them, will never give anything better than maybe a photoshopped ID, and there are some lads who barely need any prodding to take a picture with them wearing underpants on their head sitting in a baby pool filled with chocolate pudding. Sometimes no matter how hard you try, there's just no way to get a lad to budge. Don't fret about what you have done wrong/could have done wrong, as most of the time, it is not your fault. You can practically follow the baiting textbook word-by-word (if there were such a thing), and still have no luck through no fault of your own. Patience always helps, but remember that there are always more fish in the sea, and if this lad doesn't do anything fun, then try again and again. It is extremely rare that someone finds a great lad quickly just because of statistics; there are exceptions of course, like Lake Amour with Mr. Humphere (selfish advertising here, as I was a part of that bait), but still, some lads aren't destined to be great at all. Personally, I would just continue going with the flow of the bait as is; sometimes lads suddenly reach points where they open up and trophies start flowing freely, and hopefully with enough time your lad will do the same. Or, as I said, he will just give up as he already kind of has. The fact that he is already off-script is promising, although it is hard to tell if he is really willing to do anything. He suggested you come to Ghana; try taking him up on the offer. Even if nothing comes of it, it's at least worth a shot, as it is unlikely it will make him twig, while increasing the chance he does something fun.

^ absolutely to all this, and you're not doing anything 'wrong' - some lads will cough up pretty much on demand, some never will. It's a case-by-case thing.

You've got to keep in mind what every lad wants: money, of course, but also and importantly without working too hard for it. Like most other criminals, under the right circumstances a lad will go to bizarre and seemingly self-defeating amounts of effort in order to not 'work' as they see it, but the circumstances have to be right.

In this case, you have got your lad believing implicitly in Anita, but also in her chopper. The amount of effort this lad will give out is at best proportional to the return he anticipates, and in this case he is expecting to lose it all to a chopper. Why should he stir himself? If he's a pro lad he's got tens of other, easier prospects open to him. That's just how it goes sometimes.

In this case I'd move on to my other baits and keep him waiting. Time is your friend here, and you will very likely get a follow-up email when he has a moment to 'spare' or has run through the easy mugus. At that state you can decide how to play it - your character could tearfully 'repent', having been taken by the evil Dr Pepper but good, it could all still be going on, or perhaps another chopper has entered the fray, pushed Dr Pepper aside and is now getting all the lovely Money that Ben Freedom could have had if only he'd've been willing to take the Temperance Oath and give Anita a photo...

The Humphere bait was a thing of beauty, and considering it was one of Lake Amour's first, just makes it that much more awesome. Everyone involved deserves exaltation. Thanks so much for your advice. I thought as much, but to read it affirmed, helps set my mind at ease. If nothing else, I am wasting his time, so I will embrace that aspect.

At this point, you need to put yourself in the shoes of a real woman who is being scammed and has no idea of it as she is in love. In all probability, that aspect will be more important to her than either gaining, or losing, money, especially if she is comfortably off.

So, why not try the womanly wiles of sending a one-liner, full of pain and pent up tears: "But I thought you loved me!". He will probably respond. The next step would be to freeze him out for a while - ten to one he will send a couple of follow ups - then, somewhat molified, your character, can begin to reply again. But, if this lad doesn't want the work of sending a fake photo, offer him marriage when 'she' comes to meet him in Ghana.

See where that takes you...

One other reason some lads won't send requested pictures -- they are boxed in a corner after previously sending fake pictures downloaded from the web. Once a lad sends a picture of a respectable older businessman or barrister he can't turn around and send a picture that is different. I've run into that wall many times.

Being called stupid or very stupid by a Lad is a perplexing matter. It doesn't seem to mean what most people would take it to mean. For example, when a Lad claiming to be a Swiss banker said that he and his wife could only spare €1,750 of the €3,250, Cammy was scornful.

I don't know why, but I have often found that lads are hyper-sensitive about being called out for drinking. I've run into that in many baits, so of course I always ramp up the allegations when they get so indignant.

It must be a cultural thing. It sure is easy to wind them up over it.
