Yesterday I opened a docx file from Gmail, it opened correctly. But my mentor asked me if I knew it was safe before I opened it.
Well I did not it looked OK. Later I looked online and saw that docx files could not contain viruses or macros.
It did get me to thinking.
I am now trying to set up a virtual box with Linux Ubuntu to do my baiting from, then I guess I would be safe and if something happens I can remove the session from the virtual box.

Do any of you have experience with this?

From my experience, files that Gmail can open are safe to open as they are read and interpreted on Google - macros which can be a security risk are not executed.

Using Ubuntu in virtual box for baiting, opening files and visiting sites, etc... is the best and safest way. Unless you share your files and folders between virtual box and your hosting system, you are fine and very safe.

If you want to run Linux and Windows on the same box, either make it dual-boot (which I did many years ago) or run Windows in a virtual session in Linux. Don't run Linux inside Windows, because if Windows crashes, which it is more likely to, then you've lost your Linux session.

Thanks for the replies.
I am running Linux in a Virtual Box in Windows. Installing it did not take that long. I will see how it goes with crashing and stuff. So far it is running fine.
