These types of scams work because they always have. They are tried and tested. You know nothing of the victims. Chastising them is not going to bode well.

One might think that everyone on the planet would never make such a mistake. But one would be wrong if one did. Desperation can make a person do what would otherwise seem unthinkable, and often does.

Edit to add: @dorfman, it almost sounds like you are a scammer who is trying to justify your actions. I'm NOT accusing you of anything, I'm just saying.

Dorfman, speaking as a newbie myself here, I'd like to give you some free advice based on what I've learned here so far. Firstly, you may be a very nice person in RL, but you need to think
about the tone of your messages and the way they are coming across to others. I don't know how old you are but you remind me of an excitable puppy - and I also think that you're being
overly ambitious about what you expect to achieve. You've mentioned "being brave enough to go in" with TV crews, police, even SWAT teams - and that just isn't going to happen. SWAT teams
are not going to tool you up and send you in to confront some low-level scammer sitting in an internet café. The best I expect is to (a) waste a scammer's time (every minute he spends focusing
on me is a minute less spent on some innocent victim), and (b) getting bank account and credit card numbers to report. Getting a lad to lose the plot and start insulting you is also part of the fun,
although the secret is to never let them know you were anything less than a genuine potential victim.

You talk about "turkeys" and sound scornful of anyone "daft enough" to fall for scams. While trunk boxes full of money do sound like an obvious scam to many, what about the scammers who have
fake websites that sell puppies? Look at the "Who wants to buy a puppy massbait" on this forum and check out some of the very professional-looking websites that these scammers are operating.
People would be easily be taken in by it. Or what about the lonely widow/widower who meets a nice man/woman online and ends up losing money because she/he was slowly sucked into the charade,
having had his/her emotions played with mercilessly?

I read a huge number of baits on this site before I finally decided I wanted to join in, so by the time I signed up I understood a lot more about the "business" of scambaiting. I also respect the opinions
and experience of the other people on here, and the mods who help keep it all together. Finally, I signed up for a mentor to keep me right on the best way to be a baiter, and if you're serious
about learning the ropes I'd recommend you do too.

This is a great forum, with some great people, and much fun to be had, so I hope you decide to be part of it, but honestly, I'd recommend doing a bit of reading first so you know what to expect,
and what's expected of you. Smile

Everyone: you really shouldnt take every message said so seriously and warn me about being perfect or arrogant. I would never get into something over the internet without being 100% sure that it isnt a scam. There are plenty of good stores where to buy things for a much better price then in real life stores. Thats what the net is so great for and of course downloading movies and music. But each conscious user has to know the dangers of the net at the same time. You cant buy anything if you arent sure about it completly! So there are dangers often and we need to watch out for them.

It is true that out of desperation one would do anything like contact a healer to save their child when modern medicine fails to deliver and there is no other way to prevent death. Ive seen that on italian tv often when they helped these unhappy parents not to get scammed by fairy tale surgeons.

Is a troll an undercover scammer trying to scam scambaiters?

Well I am definetly not one and Im willing to do anything to prove Im someone who really wants to know how to scambait properly.

Im not perfect far from it but I really believe anyone surfing the net should know they cant trust anyone who isnt 100% secure.

Ive seen often on italian tv all kinds of scammers and there was this lady called Vanna Marchi who scammed tens of thousands of people in italy by offering lottery numbers and various prizes. But she had been defended by many after being finally put on trail together with her daughter that the fact that so many have fallen for someone who yelled and acted stupid in her show must have had no brain or mistaken these "caricatures" as actual retailers. You cant really take someone like that seriously who offer so much. And there is a great italian proverb "mai fidarsi di chi promette molto" never trust anyone who promises much!

Else we could all just sit in front of the laptop all day never needing to go out of the house anymore.
I know that it would never happen to get swats and tv unless I managed to cooperate with them personally being placed as a bait. Of course when you are buying things online you need to be absolutely certain that it isnt a scam! This is the internet and likewise it goes for dating sites and lotteries. It can only be good if you are surely not getting scamed. You need to know whether it really is a lonely person looking for comfort!

Is a suicide lad someone also someone posing as a victim but a real scammer?

Anyways thank you guys for everything and I guess you have figured out by now Im smart enough never to get scammed by anyone let alone flying to meet them and fall for perhaps even a deadly trap!

Welcome to Eater. Please read the Stickies: it will give you a better idea of what we do and how to do it.

Don't call victims stupid. They aren't. Anybody can be scammed: it just takes the right subject and planner. If you've ever bought off Ebay, used AutoTrader or Craig's list or any on-line sales/rental site, you are at risk. One think we do is help victims by publishing scam info at our sister site, ScamWarners and it is amazing how sophisticated business people can be scammed.

Take a look at our surplus section if you need a lad. Or follow the directions in the Stickies for setting up a catcher. Above all, bait safely. Do not use an email address r phone that is connected with your RL info

Yes, but some victims still fall. Enough amount of victims to keep the business alive since decades ago.

Scammers send millions of spam messages to get a handfull of victims willing to pay.

As for "a bit of brain", that's more complex than it looks. Mental inhabilites do exist and are no joke. Remember the movie "A beautiful mind"? That guy was a Nobel laureate but his paranoid disorder could've exposed him to, v.gr., the hitman format.

I consider myself to be very "scam-aware" when it comes to online scams, due in part to the time I've spent here reading these forums. However, that did not prevent me from nearly falling for an IRS phone scam a few months ago. At first, the very real threat of going to jail was overwhelming, and prevented the normal logical thought process. However, after a few minutes, it was very easy to identify the presence of the scam, and I immediately hung up the phone and have not corresponded with them again, since they have my personal phone #. I am nearly a seasoned veteran in the world of scam-baiting, but am not immune to the effects of a well-perpetrated scam. So imagine how easy it is to fool the less savvy, and especially, those who WANT to believe it is real.
