Because not everybody has (or wants to produce) a passport or driving licence, for whatever reason.
I guess what I'm saying is that every law abiding person will have to go through the mill just to get a bloody pay and go phone, whereas we both know that terrorists will get them anyway, ID or not.
Look at the case for guns and explosives.
Currently, a law abiding UK citizen can't just go out and buy a Beretta 9mm and 200 rounds (rightly so) but a terrorist / nutter / bank robber has no problem.
It targets the wrong people as always.
(And just for the record, I'm all for UK ID cards by the way, and I carry my passport everywhere I go. It works well in Germany, it'll work here once people get used to it.... but that's another debate) |

Meh - most law abiding citizens wouldn't have a problem showing some kind of ID as they have nothing to hide, right?  I don't think this is yet another erosion of my civil liberties as there's already a huge amount of personal info about me on various databases if Big Brother is interested. And if there's any info Big Brother doesn't already know I'm happy to provide it.
I guess this makes baiting from a totally anonymous phone more difficult but then again it only becomes a problem if a lad reports me to Vodafone, who in turn report me to the cops, who in turn report me to... |
