And if it weren't already obvious that New Lad has replaced Stupid Lad, 15 minutes after I sent that reply to the new address, from my new address, a mail came in from Stupid Lad's original address to my original address:

So he's out of the loop and is stuck trying to figure out how to get me on the hook while being certain that my fake lad is reading our mails. I couldn't believe he even addressed it to both my character and my fake lad!

I wonder if it's possible to get both lads on safari to Nigeria? Wouldn't that be a scene if they end up running into each other at a designated meeting place.......

Finally the lad replies. I guess he doesn't read what I write; I had made it clear I left Yaoundé Cameroon for Port Harcourt Nigeria, and explained why. More than once. But:

With deep thanks once again to a helpful fellow baiter, New Lad just got the phone call he was demanding. Too bad it woke him up. Laughing

Here's a report from our colleague:

I just sent a followup mail. Close to 2AM there.

Nothing from new lad today.

Just to stir the pot, I went back to my original email address and wrote to the first lad, at his old address. I don't know if anything will come of it but I believe there are at least 3 lads involved now, including this original lad who has apparently been cut out of the deal by his oga.

Perhaps Fake lLad could try to recruit New lad --or old lad for that matter? He can't locate the victim, but he is sure she still trusts the commandant. Neither lad will trust him of course, but if fake lad drops a clue to make it seem that A) the victim is real, b) the victim still has plenty of cash, and C) the victim is not too far away, it might get the bait moving again.

If it goes no further than this, Juan, it was a lot of fun. You had this lad on the hook for a long time, safaried him, made two lads unhappy with one another, and made me laugh.

The next time we need to come up with a reason not to go all the way to the camp. That was the only chink in the armor of believablity.

Alas, it's going no further. New lad is hanging up on calls. Old lad is ignoring emails. My character told him the other day that fake lad had tracked her to Port Harcourt and she needed help to get her $50K-plus in cash to the original lad. Even that didn't motivate him to respond, so I decided to end it with a flourish.

Fake lad just wrote to original lad:
