What's the lad's game? Bank accounts?

A new one on me...I've been stringing this lad along for a few weeks and it's going in a strange direction. It's the same old refugee with a zillion dollars to send to my bank account, but there's no fee. Instead, he's instructed me to create a bank account (in the US, not offshore) and give him the username and password to access it, even though it has no cash in it.

If he was to actually send cash mule-style, I could just tell him to piss off and keep it.

Poor thing...he kept messing up the password and now it appears that he can't access it from a Benin IP address.

Are you saying he asked you to open a new account with a real bank?

Yes, he did ask for a new account to be set up. No fee demand at all.

He's trying to enter the information into an online site for Bank of America and can't quite seem to get in. So sad.

I'm hoping she's referring to what a real mule could decide to do - not actually an uncommon thought, which hastily changes when it is explained that any claim to being an innocent victim disappears when you actually keep the money

The lad hasn't done much of anything but demand that an account be created to send millions of dollars to, so it's not at all clear why it would be needed.

I've had similar requests from lads but they never actually wanted access to the account, it was just a way to cement our relationship. This is the first time one wanted to log in.

I have always been curious how mules are recruited - I understand the job scams, but the other ones elude me, some.

That was my first thought, that he was trying to bring a mule into the fold, but it sure seems to be a sideways process. There are no assurances of anything from my side and no advantage for him.

He may just have gotten hung up in this chunk of another script, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It sure is taking up a lot of his time.

That's my understand as well, it's just that this is crossed up with the sending of "millions" to the account which doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Maybe when his frustration level blows up, I'll get a more solid idea.

Sounds like he wants you to be a money mule. He will put money into the account and ask you to withdraw and send it to him via WU. The money will likely be deposited into your account by yet another mule. So in the end the lad has the cash and the mules are in deep sixes with the banks.

I understand how the process would work, it's just funky that the first step is at the massive millions level. I would think that they would start small to set the hook.

That's what he says. The reality may be different. If it's not a setup for mulling, it's probably just a convincer to make it look genuine while he asks for fees.

I wonder if he intends to "flash the account."

That is basically he will deposit a check into that account (probably by a mule) and then when it shows up in the account, he will ask you to send him money via Money Gram or something.

I've also heard that one can do a bank transfer to an account, and then cancel it within a certain amount of time. But at first it will show up as pending or something, and then it gets canceled afterwards. In that situation, he's probably hoping you see the pending transfer, and again--you need to send him money via Western Union or something. By the time you check the account again, the cancellation has gone through.

He'll need a mule to do this, however, and I would guess a willing one.

Just throwing out a possibility.

Sadly, the bank will not allow a login from outside the US (hehehe). He's going to need a better plan.

Well tbh I am not surprised, they still use checks as main mode of bank-to-bank transfer and completely unsecure credit cards Very Happy
